This blog explores the diverse landscape of GIS in campus operations, emphasizing that it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. Despite varying needs across different campuses, the common approach involves starting small with specific goals and gradually expanding GIS integration. The post highlights the versatility of GIS tools like ArcGIS Indoors and emphasizes the need for organizations to identify their starting point and align technology with their goals. We examine three unique use-cases in this space.

“Esri is what allows us to put all these layers of data onto a map in one place and convert it all to actionable insight in digital dig boards,” shares Duncan. “We can print a business-card-sized sticker with a QR code portal to the entire project information set. I’ve seen them on helmets.”

Connecting People to Places: Michigan State University’s Use of Mobile Technologies 👷‍

"....We also built relationships with technology vendors that allowed us to provide actionable feedback on how their software or application was being used by the workforce. This, in turn, allowed for greater product innovation that had a direct benefit for our workforce. One of the best examples of this is with the ESRI ArcGIS Indoors application."

🌐 Campus CAD floor plan drawings that were created for architecture, engineering, or construction (AEC) purposes often have small linework gaps, misplaced text, and other conditions that can impede the data import process and affect data quality. These conditions are often difficult to detect prior to import, and they’re costly to account for after.

Esri has a solution to avoid this potential data quality impairment by checking for errors in the CAD data before it is ingested into Indoors:
ArcGIS Indoors for AutoCAD!

🌐 With the November 2023 release of ArcGIS GeoBIM, teams can collaborate with mobile workers thanks to a new integration with ArcGIS Field Maps. Project stakeholders can quickly access accurate field information, staying on top of site logistics and accelerating issue turnaround.

Using ArcGIS GeoBIM, mobile workers have access to an expressive mobile map of the construction site and the latest engineering documents and issues from Autodesk Construction Cloud. They can provide instant updates from mobile devices and reduce delays from disconnected data collection.

ArcGIS IPS is Esri’s indoor positioning system that brings the blue dot positioning experience to indoor maps. It allows users to instantly locate themselves and others inside a building in real time which helps improve indoor navigation, safety and security (e.g. reducing emergency response times), and workflow efficiencies (e.g. workforce location sharing and resource allocation).

This release of ArcGIS IPS for ArcGIS Pro 3.2 comes with a substantial enhancement to the indoor positioning system setup process. Until now, enabling ArcGIS IPS required the performance of an IPS survey of the indoor space to collect radio reference data (Bluetooth or WiFi).

Universities no longer need to have lengthy management processes that rely on static floorplans, but instead can view all assets, people, and spaces across their buildings, rooms, and floors in an interactive digital map - we call this “Indoor GIS”.

Using Indoor GIS, it provides any estate management staff to have the complete, real-time, operational view of any part of their university which will help them to optimise space utilisation, improve asset management, and streamline maintenance activities.

Are you currently using INSITE as your computer aided facility management (CAFM) system?

The University of Rhode Island (URI) has been using the INSITE suite of products including Net-FM and Visual-FM for many years.  With the deprecation of these products looming, the team at URI looked to ArcGIS Indoors as a replacement.

Take a look a this great blog by Jeffrey Ulricksen, Assistant Director of Spatial Services at URI, explaining their reasoning, challenges, and bottom line moving from INSITE to ArcGIS Indoors.
