Esri's Keith VanGraafeiland explains how ArcGIS is used to measure coastal eutrophication and its very real impact.

SDG 14.1 aims to prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution, by 2025.  By measuring coastal eutrophication, a process that leads to increased algae growth resulting in changes in the balance of organisms and water quality due to increased nutrients, we can better understand global impacts and what we can do to prevent them. Mapping these changes over time helps individual countries better understand the issue and take action to reduce the activities that lead to nutrient pollution.
