convertworkspace.py - read old pre-7x coverages

UPDATE

I've posted a 10.1 pyt version of this tool: Convert Workspace

If you  have 10.1 or later, please use that one as it has better documentation.

--------------------------------------------------------

Pre-7 ArcInfo workspaces can be identified using Windows Explorer by looking in the "info" folder. Pre-7 workspace contain a file named "arcdr9"; the 7.0 format uses the filename "arc.dir" for this file. Dataset folders in the workspace will have short file names (arc, arx) that are renamed in the new format with an .adf extension (arc.adf, arx.adf).

This is a very old format (ArcInfo 7.0 was released in 1997) but it still may appear in old archived data files.

With ArcGIS 10.x, this old format is unreadable without ArcInfo Workstation installed. This script may be able to recover data from an old ArcInfo (pre-7) workspace without ArcInfo Workstation. This script tool should work with all ArcGIS 10.x and Pro.

Thanks for sharing Curtis. I have no need for this at this point since I still have workstation installed, but it sure nice to know there is a workaround for the ancient stuff once I don't.  I'm going to make an effort thus year to get all that old stuff updated...but best laid plans...
