Airports Geographic Information System in the Cloud

Abstract:
Airports GIS is a web portal which hosts a few application modules. Airports GIS allows authorized users to submit changes to airport data. The users submit  airports data using a survey application available to them in the web portal. One of the requirements for Airports to submit this data is to provide  imagery (aerial or LIDAR)  associated with their projects to office of Airports.  The office of Airports used to archive these imageries for future use after appropriate validation and verification of relevant data. However, this storage  consumed a lot of space and the data was not easily manageable. Hence, we developed an  application in Airports GIS which helped us upload these imageries to Amazon GovCloud, a secure cloud environment. Once the imageries are in the cloud, the users can visualize them using  an instance of ESRI ArcGIS available in the GovCloud. Hence, Cloud serves a few purposes: storage, management, and more importantly visualization. Currently we have uploaded more than 400 airport imageries to the Cloud. We hope it will increase to one thousand by the end of this year.   The Cloud also serves  as a storage of Airport Marking and Signing Plans and Runway Safety Area Determination documents.
