Education campus story maps.pdf

Facilities managers and technologists on education campuses have a growing body of stakeholders that rely on access to information—from casual to critical—in a variety of ways. One way of communicating to a diverse array of stakeholders is via Story Maps using free templates that are part of ArcGIS, http://storymaps.arcgis.com/en/app-list/.

Story Maps are interactive digital documents that bring together text, photos, videos, and other media in a map-based wrapper that examine the world in its many perspectives from global to local.

Attached is a brief document that points to a number of education campus-focused Story Maps. All of them tell stories that are easy to use, digest, and share (a URL). Here are few highlights.

  • One of the newest examples that we have discovered is the University of Virginia’s Green Guide. Like the data in it? They have provided a download link which gives you a picture of the XLS data structure for the story map.
  • UConn too has a similarly dedicated app where they have embedded video to help tell the tale of green infrastructure in greater detail.
  • UMass-Amherst has created a simple way to share a decade of campus development, where stakeholders likely include alums, donors, as well as campus senior executives and others.
  • University of Utah has used the templates to create campus tours and has then moved the user inside the university hospital providing a floor-by-floor visit. It’s also good to note that if you zoom out in this application, you discover that the hospital and its interiors (scale-dependent) are seamlessly connected to the university’s main campus basemap visible in the campus tours.

Have fun examining these and the other user examples.
