Once, only cartographers made maps. Today anyone can. Still, cartographers can teach people to make better maps, just as chefs can show people how to cook better meals. With coaching from experienced cartographers and practical, hands-on exercises using ArcGIS Pro, you'll become a smarter mapmaker, ready to go beyond the defaults and make better maps.
About the Course
Cartography. is a free, instructor-led massive open online course (MOOC) offered by Esri. The course lasts six weeks and requires two to three hours of study per week. Weekly course sections consist of a video discussion, hands-on exercises, a quiz, a discussion and supplementary resources. Students will receive free access to Esri’s ArcGIS Pro desktop software during the course. A certificate of completion will be awarded at the end of the course.
When is the next offering of Cartography.? How do I register?
The master calendar for all the MOOCs is at http://www.esri.com/mooc. Scroll to the middle of the page. You can register for the next session at http://esri.com/mooc/cartography. You should receive a confirmation e-mail from Esri right away. Closer to the course start date you will receive an invitation to begin the course. If you sign up after the course start date, it may take a few days to receive your e-mail invitation.
Will I get a certificate for the MOOC?
Students who complete the course in its entirety will receive a certificate of completion via Udemy, our partner platform for this course. Certificates are not available until all the course content is open and completed. The final section of the course opens at the beginning of week six.
How much do I need to know about cartography, GIS or Esri technology?
The MOOC has no prerequisites, but some familiarity with mapping and GIS concepts may enhance your experience. If you’re new to GIS, you may find it helpful to go through the free Esri web course, Getting Started with GIS.
Do I need to have access to ArcGIS software?
No. All MOOC students will be given access to an ArcGIS Online organizational account and ArcGIS Pro desktop software. We strongly encourage all students to confirm they have access to a computer that meets the ArcGIS Online browser requirements and the ArcGIS Pro system requirements. Students who can run ArcGIS Pro will have the best experience in the course.
Can I take the lessons at any time? Are there weekly deadlines?
You are free to work at your own pace. The course includes six sections consisting of video lectures, exercises, quizzes and other activities. Lessons are released weekly on Tuesdays at 12 pm Pacific Time. To plan your time, expect to spend about 2-3 hours on each section. To earn a certificate of completion, all sections must be completed within two weeks of the class end date. A course calendar can be found in this group under the "Content" tab.
How long will I have access to the content after the MOOC ends?
You will have two weeks after the session ends to finish the exercises. After that time the ArcGIS Online accounts will be closed and ArcGIS Pro licenses revoked. Course materials (videos, exercise PDFs, etc.) will remain available on Udemy for up to six months after that (and the Udemy content is downloadable).
Will the MOOC show up in my Esri training history?
No, your MOOC completion is recorded by Udemy and will not appear in your Esri training history at this time. We hope to include MOOCs in the training history in the future.
If I still have a question, where can I get help?
