City/State of School, School District, or Group: Veira, FL

Grade level of students you or your educator collaborator work/worked with: Grade 6

Subject/topic of class/group you assisted your collaborator with: Using GIS to Analyze Students with Free Lunch

Approximately how many students were engaged in GIS activities through this collaboration: 1

How did you connect with your collaborator? I contacted the staff I know in School Board to request for data.

Describe your collaboration process.  We had email communications back and forth for about six times. I first contacted him to request the data. While I was communicating with him, I figured out a workflow to analyze the data in GIS. Then, I worked with the student, which is actually my son, to analyze the data. Finally, my son created a story map that shows the analysis process and the results.

Describe the tasks you assisted your collaborator with. I used Spatial Statistics tools to analyze the data and use 3D to visualize the data and results.

What available resources, if any, did you use or help your collaborator use to implement GIS in K-12 education? ArcGIS Resources (http://resources.arcgis.com)

What did you gain from the experience? What do you think your educator collaborator and/or the students gained? I learned how to interact with the student while teaching him how to use GIS to solve the real world problems. The student learned how to use GIS Spatial Statistics tool to find the hot spots of spatial data and how the results can help make decisions.

If your GeoMentoring engagement activities were documented through a classroom blog, school website, group’s social media post, newspaper or other media, please provide the websites of those posts. Story Map Link: http://arcg.is/2aood1s

Any additional comments about your experience? Teaching students to think spatially can help them understand the world better.
