Hi!

Due to many feature layers in our web map, we can truly see the benefit of being able to group layers in ArcGIS Online and Collector.

Hello Odd,

Thank you for submitting this idea! This is similar to the existing idea https://community.esri.com/ideas/5062‌, but that idea appears to pre-date Collector for ArcGIS so I will not mark this as a duplicate.

Could you provide a use case or an example of a scenario where this idea would benefit your field work? What kind data are you working with, and how will you be grouping it? How many layers are contained in your web maps? What related tasks will you or your users be able to accomplish more efficiently if this were implemented?

Please consider commenting to share your own perspectives when voting for this idea.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott

Here is a short story about our tasks:

We are working with road construction in Norway, the company's responsibilities include planning, constructing, operating and maintaining major roads. We use ArcGIS Online to create web maps that visualize multiple aspects of the process, but mainly the planning part of it. We’ve created web maps that include at least 25 layers. Among these are layers that in different ways are related to each other. For example, we visualize the environment around a planned project, and certain aspects of it that needs to be taken into consideration in the planning process. This is today uploaded as 10 different layers (for example cultural heritage, water environment, protected areas, outdoor environment etc). These environment data are visualized in the same web map as road geometry, project area and multiple other layers. The environment layers won’t be turned on at all time, when we like them to become visible in the map we need to click on each of the layers instead of just one group layer. It would also look a lot better in the legend/contents pane if layers with a certain theme could be grouped together like in ArcMap. It would be much easier to find the layer you’re looking for (instead of scrolling through a list of 25 layers with long names). Same applies to both ArcGIS Online and Collector. The people that work in the field gathering data about the environment (for example water samples) would have an easier job turning on and off layers (optimizing performance and visualization) and finding what they’re looking for in the map.

Hi there,

This can come in handy for my mobile data collection as well - I set up Collector for folks who need to go out into the field and perform infrastructure audits on our local Parks. This means incorporating layers such as benches, signs, drinking fountains, fences, playgrounds etc... All these layers are going into Collector for each individual park as to make syncing into our central FGDB and DMS simpler. Example - we would have all of these layers (10 different layers) for Park A, Park B, Park C, etc... which easily comes out to 30+ layers for a single Audit. Grouping layers by park would be a significant improvement in the amount of layers our field staff would need to toggle on/off, which would reduce field time, QA/QC post processing needs, and ease of use for out non-GIS staff.

Hope this can get implemented! Thanks!
