For those considering moving to ArcGIS Collector for mobile data collection and may have been using handheld devices with Trimble TerraSync or a similar software, they are used to certain fields auto-populating with values. Some examples are the date and time the feature was collected, or the name of the file the feature is collected in. When moving to Collector, we could enable editor tracking but if the user works in disconnected mode, we get all the date's and times collected populated by when they sync their edits. As far as a file name or anything that would indicate which user collected the feature, we only get the user that the FeatureService used when it was set up. That means the user now has to hand-enter dates, times, usernames, etc. While individual operating systems provide some good datetime pickers, this still means the user has to provide input for something that the device should already be aware of.
In order to not have to take a step backward while taking a step forward in our data collection efforts, it would be good to be able to configure an app intended for use in Collector so that fields can be AUTOPOPULATED using a few different methods.
- From a list of system values: Date, Time, Date and Time, System/device name, etc.
- From AGOL user information: Username, Organization, etc.
- From location information: Lat, Lon, X, Y in various formats (dec deg., dms, etc)
