Long-running script error in ArcGIS.com map and IE9

Hello.

I am trying to configure pop-ups for three point features on the default basemap in the ArcGIS Online map viewer.   I am using IE9. These three points features were saved as a shapefile from ArcMap, zipped, and then the .zip was added to the ArcGIS Online basemap.  While I can change point symbology without any problem, I cannot configure pop-ups.  IE9 freezes and eventually a message appears saying that ???arcgis.com is not responding due to a long-running script???.

This does not happen in the latest versions of Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.  Unfortunately, my school only has IE9 installed and available in our student computer labs.

I have noticed some similar problems described in other ArcGIS Online forum postings.  The reason for the script error is typically explained as resulting from too many point features in the online map and browser limitations.  I don't think those reasons apply in this case with my zipped shapefile as there were only three point features in the shapefile.

I have attached the .zip file.

Thanks,

I am not seeing this problem. How are you configuring the popup? Does it freeze after choosing the "configure popups" option or after doing some configuration?

What version are you running? I am running 9.0.9, I believe. See attached image.

thanks,

Mike

Mike:

It freezes after I click "Configure Pop-up".  I can get to the Pop-up Properties settings, but IE9 freezes and I can make no selections.

I am using the identical version of IE9 that you are using, 9.0.9.

Screen captures of the before and after are attached.  The after image is frozen.

I am having the exact same issue as Scott. I use IE9 and my process was the same as. I imported a zip file containing 10 points in ArcGIS.com. When I click on "configure pop-up" I get the same "long-running script" error, and IE9 freezes.

I also am having the same issue with this long running script when I try to configure popups for an uploaded shapefile of points.
I am mostly using IE 9.0.8.

In general, Internet Explorer (version 9 and earlier; earlier versions are worse) is not able to handle the kinds of drawing and visualization ArcGIS Online requires. Sometimes it works, but as you add larger amounts of data, it fails. Thus, you may see these sorts of script errors. It means you've exceeded the ability of the browser. If you can, I'd suggest switching to a different browser, like Chrome or Firefox. If you can't, but can download a plugin to IE, you can try Google Chrome Frame (http://www.google.com/chromeframe) which basically runs the Chrome browser inside IE.

Thanks,

Mike

I am having the same issue when configuring the popup. I am using IE8 but cannot use the Chrome plug in because I don't have the admin rights to download and install.  Do you have any other solution I can try?

I too have the same issue. I am using Server 9.3.1 with the latest updates.

My website (map) has 4 services running 1 of which is cached. When I open it in IE 8 or Firefox, everything is fine and it loads with no problems. When I open it in IE 9 only my toolbar shows up and the map does not. When I click on a tool, IE 9 tells me I have a long running script and I have the option to stop it. Once I do, the map displays but the functionality is not quite the same.

One thing I have noticed is that if I check "Delete Browsing History Upon Exit" in IE 9, the map loads up in IE 9 every time. However this is not a "solution" I can work with.

Has anyone found a solution to open the map in IE 9 without having IE 9 delete its browsing history every time?

Thanks.

EDIT: I tried to remove the cached layer to be dynamic and not store anything on the client end but the same problem persisted.

Any suggestions?

SOLUTION: One of the services I was using was an ESRI basemap that I downloaded and reprojected and published as a service for my map to use. It appears this reprojected ESRI basemap service was causing the problem as once I removed it, the IE 9 problem mentioned above went away.

As I understand it, Google Chrome Frame does not require admin rights to install.

Hi Mike,

I found the cause for my problem listed in my post above. Can you tell me if there's a better / proper(?) way of using an ESRI basemap in a different projection? I downloaded an ESRI basemap MXD, reprojected it, and published it as a map service. Again, everything works fine unless it's the problem I described in my previous post.

Thanks.
