I am running ArcGIS Explorer 1200 build on my computer. I try to add layers and layer packages and I get the error "Failed to add layer package......Invalid File" I tried several times recreating the layer file in arcmap and i get the same error.

I have also tried adding just the shapefile and then symbolizing as one would so in arcmap but it doesnt seem to have this capability. Has anyone experienced similar issues?

Dimitri,

Usually I would suggest this is due to the coordinate system, or rather the lack of. However if you can add the Shapefile to ArcGIS Explorer directly without any issue then this is unlikely to be the cause. Are you able to post a Layer Package on the foum that I could test?

I get that same error when trying to add layers that reference version 10 geodatabases. 9.3 versions work fine. I'm also using 1200.

Nicholas,

Unfortunately ArcGIS Explorer 1200 was released some time before ArcGIS 10.0 and therefore cannot read ArcGIS 10.0 Geodatabases directly. There will soon be a new release (1500) which addresses this plus provide many new features.

Until the new release, you can export content from ArcGIS 10.0 as a Layer Package - this will be fine in ArcGIS Explorer 1200.

If you are trying to access ArcGIS Server 10.0 services from Explorer 1200 there is a patch to support this: http://resources.arcgis.com/content/patches-and-service-packs?fa=viewPatch&PID=116&MetaID=1624.

I am also having this problem with a file, I have been converting shape files for a project for the past few days, and now one of them will not work.

Failed to add Layer Package(s) ...(Invalid File)

I can add the layer package into ArcGIS 10 no problem, it is from a 9.3.1 database, has the proper coordinate system.. now I am stumped.

I have attached the layer package, can anyone help?

Thanks
Tina

Tina,

This Layer Package works fine in the new ArcGIS Explorer 1500 - which will be available pretty soon: http://video214.com/play/8ZBlX9L4o1aUfsikyx0mkw/s/dark.

I am also getting the error:  "failed to add layer package(s):" when trying to add a layer to Explorer 1500.

This occurs if the layer was created from a personal geodatabase developed in the ArcGIS 9.3 environment.

No problems if I create a layer from a file geodatabase developed in the AG 10.0 environment.

Jason,

I can appreciate that perhaps a little more information on why the file is invalid would be useful, but that is expected behaviour - Personal Geodatabases are not supported in ArcGIS Explorer. File Geodatabases are the preferred data type for local data, even at 9.X.

I have also encountered the "Invalid Layer" error when I try to add a layer to explorer.

The layer was created from a shapefile and in 9.3.1. A geographic coordinate system is defined. Explorer is the 1500 build. The shapefile itself opens fine in explorer.

Can Explorer 1500 only read layers created in 10?

Hi,

ArcGIS Explorer can read layers / layer packages created in 9.3.1 or 10.0. Would it be possible for you to zip-up and post your layer/data/layer package here? - i'll give it a test.

Cheers
