I heard about an arcscript for arcreader 9.3 that would show your location on the map based on a gps connected to the laptop. Does anyone know where i can find one for version 10? Are arc scripts still being used for version 10?

The old ArcScripts site is frozen, and the new code gallery is seriously FUBAR:  I just can't get uploads to work.  The latest version of the GPS Custom Layer for ArcReader is available directly from my own web site:

http://www.pierssen.com/arcgis10/arcreader.htm

If I can ever get the code gallery to work for me 😞 I'll post it there as well.

Hey partner, I have 10.3, but the 10.3 version i downloaded does not have a setup file.  Therefore I ran the regedit file, then ran the add addin.  I can get the gps layer to show in ARCmap but it does not show when I open the published file from said map.  Not sure what I am doing wrong.  Did I miss something?

Thank you

You need to make sure it’s also installed on the ArcReader machine. See the FAQ for other tips.

Thank you for the quick reply,

I have it on both. I went ahead and ran the installer from 10.2, then

created the apps folder as it is listed in the reg file, restarted the

machine and it started working. Thank you!!

Yeah, i used the 10.2.2 and it worked fine.

BTW, there's no setup for 10.3 because VS 2013 doesn't come with an out-of-the-box setup project.  I'm dropping support for this app anyway, and will not create a version for 10.4.  I strongly recommend migrating to ArcGIS Runtime.  Collector and AppStudio are also viable approaches for non-programmers.

We are using the Custom GPS Layer for ArcReader and it works great. We've got a project coming up where we'd like to add 2 GPS layers but are unable too. Is there any chance you'd be interested in developing this further so we could add 2 GPS layers to 1 ArcReader project? Or do you know of another possible solution?

Do you want multiple layers for one GPS unit?  That's definitely not possible, because the app locks the serial port.  That's why you can't have other GPS software running, because it will also lock the port.  If you want to support multiple GPS units on different ports I guess that might be possible, but my question would be "Why?"  A quick test would be for you to download the code from the web site, comment out the lines checking for an existing layer, and see if it actually works.
