Can't view ESRI Grid Files

Hi,

Well been using ArcMap 9.3.1 for over a year now, primarily to analyse and model ESRI Grid files (in a binary format). I also have 3D Analyst and Spatial Analyst.

Over the weekend our server was updated and now I can not view any of these files. It gives me the error message "Unknown Spatial Reference" when I try to bring them into ArcMap, and then won't display them at all. In ArcCatalog it simply won't display the image.

They all have projection files, which are correct.

The files are the same as they were on Friday, but for some reason I can't view them in ArcMap or ArcCatalog anymore.

I have run the "REPAIR" feature on my installation DVD, but with no luck.

Am I missing something? What are my options?

Thanks, Pete

Hey Pete,

Are you able to open grid raster from your local drive?  Also have you installed the latest service pack for ArcGIS 9.3.1?

ArcGIS (Desktop, Engine, Server) 9.3.1 Service Pack 2

Does anyone else have problems opening these files in ArcMap?

Hi Timothy,

The grid files are "rrd" and "aux" primary files (with associated "adf" and "xml" files in folders). I downloaded a trial version of Golden Surfer to have a look at the data, and that worked.

I have installed the Service Pack 2 and other recent updates.

I am the only one in our office with ESRI, and am thinking an uninstall and reinstall might be the best bet (at least the least time consuming now).

So is the raster not able to be seen in the map, but will be in the table of contents?  The spatial reference error should not prevent it from being viewed, it indicates that the spatial reference is not recognized.  Can you right click on the raster in the table of contents and 'Zoom to Layer?'

If it still will not display then I recommend creating a Support call to have someone take a look at it with you.

You might look into contacting Esri Support.  There could be one of a number of things causing this issue.  It could be that the data is corrupt, might be something with remnant files from previous version, or it could be a system setting. It is really hard to tell without really digging into it.

Have talked to support center about the issue. We found out that for some reason the raster file won't read the projection file when on the server. Works find on my local machine (which isn't much use when all the data is on the server). Have had to now pass this onto our IT gurus to look at.

Thanks for help people.
