Hi

I've got a little problem where ArcReader 10 crashes when using the "Find" function/tool.
Are there any known causes for this? And how can it be corrected?

Thanks for the help.

Wow Barry, that does not sound like a minor problem at all. Pretty much makes the product useless without the ability to search/find. Surprised no one from ESRI has replied to this concern yet. Do you have the SP1 loaded? Have you contacted tech support yet?
I am having a similar problem. Only you are getting one step further. Mine crashes any time I try to open a published map document with more than one layer! 😞

Hi Jim

I sent this post as well as another on converting network data from PGDB to FGDB to tech support about 3 weeks ago. No response as yet.

In the meantime, I switched to ArcReader 9.3 for our clients to use, with no problems. I'll definitely post the response once I get some feedback.

Hi,

I've got a client with the same problem: ArcReader10 crashes when launching the Find Tool.

Did someone came up with a solution?

Thanks in advance,

Axel

Hi Guys

No I have not gotten a response from anyone regarding this issue. Seems as though more emphasis is being placed on web content deployment rather than desktop!

Still trying to see how if it's a data issue or just a flaw in ArcReader.

My client has the same problem. However its interesting as their file geodatabase v 10 is getting corrupted at the same time. Ie the Parcel have been corrupted. See attached image. I believe that is why the find tool crashes. However once i restore to an old version make the splits in arcgis desktop 10 sp 4. Everything works fine, but a week later it corrupts the database again! Cannot see anything wrong in the editing phase (topology run its clean!) with arcgis desktop. Does anyone else have this problem?

Hi Claire

I have been experiencing similar problems with ArcGIS 10 gdb's on the whole.

Our company is currently testing 10 to decide if we are going to make the switch from 9.3.1.

We upgraded a transport network and got all sorts of problems - incorrect digitizing of turn feature classes; disconnecting of network edges; unable to build the network - problems that did not exist while the network was used 9.3.1.

So far nobody from ESRI support has been able to provide a reason why this is happening.

If you do get a response, please post!

Thanks
Barry

Here is what I have found regarding ArcReader crashing when the find tool is clicked.  I would also like to add that ArcGIS Desktop was doing the same thing on the machine.

Synopsis of our Problem
The problem PC did not have internet access, but it did have network connectivity.  We could successfully launch ArcReader and ArcDesktop.  It could see the data stored on a networked drive, and even identify the data.  Once we clicked on the Find Tool both programs would not respond...they used 0% of the processor...they were unresponsive to any mouse clicks.  We found that we had to wait approximately 15 minutes to get the Find Tool to open.  We ruled out users profile, computer, and networking issues.

Solution
After a call to Tech Support I was told that with the release of ESRI 10 software some tools, like the Find Tool, were trying to go to an ESRI service (tasks.arcgisonline.com).  Since the machine had no internet connectivity it was hanging up on this step.

Our solution was to edit the HOSTS file in the following directory...
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

We added another entry into the file referring the service ESRI was trying to hit to an internal IP address.  After doing this the Find Tool open in less then 1 minute.

I'm also having this problem with the find tool crashing ArcReader.  I tried to edit the HOSTS file as mentioned previously, but I could not find where to edit the file.  Does anyone have a solution to this.  It's very frustrating to not have a functioning find tool.
