I am using Arc 10.2.2. I am frequently getting a "no editable layers" for a shapefile layer I created. Half the time I get the error message, half the time everything is fine.

I am making a series of maps, and with every new map (I save the same map under a new name to create a .mxd file) I add to this layer.  I use the create features to add a rectangle to this shapefile and update a row in the attribute table (in a field I created). I stored the layer with accompanying .dbf, .prj, .sbn,  et cetera  and I can "edit data source" and re-add the shapefile, but this does nothing. These files are also in the default gdb. Sometimes I will open the map document and it will work, other times I have to remove and re-add the layer. Why is this happening?

Sometimes, using the pan tool to move the data fram in layout mode gets rid of the message.

Is your Shapefile located on a share drive? That may be the issue. Also, there were several patches that addressed Shapefile support in ArcGIS Desktop 10.2.x.

Thank you Richard. It's not on a share drive. How do I get to those support patches? Today I was able to edit the shapefile once, but not a second time.

The issue will be permissions related or a physical problem with the shapefile itself. To validate the health of the shape file follow the instructions found at:

http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//005600000010000000

On the security side be sure the person editing has full control over all the files utilized by the shapefile.

Some patches you may try loading are found at

http://support.esri.com/en/downloads/patches-servicepacks/view/productid/66/metaid/2026

Try theses, especially if you have a large number of fields in the shapefile or use cut and paste to copy features.

Hope these help.
