How can I create an empty MPK file with ArcMap that only contains a specific spatial reference? This will be used to load shape files dynamically.

Hi

Empty/blank maps cannot be packaged but you can add a new group layer to the dataframe and navigate to View > DataFrame Properties to specify the coordinate system before sharing as a Map Package by going to File > Share As > Map Package.

This is not correct for the .NET Runtime map. I get an error when I use an empty mpk with just an empty GroupLayer in it. It requires an empty feature layer in order for it to be successful.

I used this as a reference when I was trying to figure out why my dynamic layer was failing to be initialized.

Any chance there might be a way to add a truly empty mpk for this purpose to the Runtime map eventually?

Hi,

Sorry - we tightened up the Spatial Reference requirements when initializing layers - you can still just use a GroupLayer but you need to:

- Open the Map Document (MXD) which only contains a Group Layer

- Open the DataFrame Properties dialog

- Set the property ‘Extent Used by Full Extent Command’

By default it is the ‘Extent of data in all layers’, which is effectively null when the map only contains a GroupLayer.

Cheers

Mike
