Hi All,

We are facing issue while starting up the map services from ArcGIS SOM (9.2).  When starting the map service from ArcGIS SOM, the status is showing as 'Starting' for about 2 to 5 mins and subsequently failing to start the map service.  We have SOM running in a different server and ArcSDE in a different server, as an initial trouble shooting process we have suspected that this might be due to firewall and network issue and requested our vendor team to clean up the system and network firewall rule if any.  After successfully ruling out those options, we still have issue while starting the map services.

As part of trouble shooting process we made a SDE connection from ArcCatalog and tested, for the 1st SDE connection request the connection is successfully made within 2 mins and from the next time onward the connection takes too long to connect.  We suspect that our map service start request is not receiving the response from SDE within the stipulated time and resulting in the status code '8' in the giomgr_esri_sde.log file with 'SE_EXIT_LOST_CLIENT  8' status.

I've tried increasing the maximum wait time of the map service to 10 mins in ArcGIS SOM Manager and tried to start the service, but still no response and the SOM crashes.

We have checked all possible solutions and ArcSDE trouble shooting process (except recreating ArcSDE service as we didn't find any SDE service related logs) and still having the same issue.  Initially we had around 50 map services and to increase internal memory space for the gsrvr.exe process we have removed around 16 map services but still we are note able start the map services.

Did any of you faced similar kind of issue earlier in ArcSDE 9.2 Windows 2003 R2 server environment. I knew everything is outdated and having limited support, but until we upgrade the current system we have to manage this for customers.  This system was running fine quite very long time since 6 years and this is the first time we are facing this kind of problem.  As part our trouble shooting process we have gathered the history of events on the particular ArcSDE server and found that 2 months back due to VSS Writer and Database back fail issue, our vendor team use to restart the server based on Adhoc request in business hours.  Since then prior to 2 months we have the map service issue going down intermittently.

Hope somebody would shed some light on this to help in this regard...

Thanks and Regards,

~Paul
