Update Georeferencing/ Raster Disappears

I am having a problem georeferencing. I have a photograph that will not build pyramids. When the .tif raster appears on the table of contents, there is a ":0" added to the end of the naming convention. I then fit to display and start adding control points. I can create a text, and rectify file no problem. The problem arises when I go to update georeferencing. The image will disappear along with the control points. When I search for the raster, I find it @ 0,0. Any ideas?

I found a similar post from a few years back. Same problem but his solution didn't help my issue...

first, I am assuming you followed the procedures here Fundamentals of georeferencing a raster dataset—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop

using this Georeferencing a raster to a vector—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop

and in step 11 you just chose to update rather than rectify?

Can you report if you have any other layers in the data frame that are in a different coordinate system than you are working with?

What happens when you open a new data frame and put updated layer into it? are the coordinates changed? are the bounds correct? Did you try to rectify?

Hi Dan,

I should state that this problem occurred what seems like "out of the blue" as I have been georeferencing for this project for months now and using the same map document. Also, I thought to use the build pyramid tool and it resulted in an error code 999999.

-I have followed the 11step procedure and I also rectified and created an imagine image, no problem there.

-All layers are GCS_WGS84

-Coordinates are the same for the new data frame once I put stable layers into it.

-I created new data frame and put the malfunctioning layer in it and went through 11 steps, updated georeferencing, same thing. Image went to 0,0 and I lost my control points.

-Rectifying is not a problem

I am not sure, but I would check the control points just in case you have a sign change somewhere in there like manual edits, crossing the international date line, a space in the file (running out of things I have seen in my classes)

Did you specifically follow this instruction? I had the same problem and this part from your link solved it for me:

Customize > ArcMap Options > Raster > Raster Dataset >

and Un-check "Use world file to define the coordinates of the raster"

I sure did! But no luck. I actually already had "Use world file to define the coordinates of the raster" box un-checked.

So here is a work around that I figured out. For some reason it seems like arc does not like to save the control points or build pyramids for raster over 100MB. The image I was trying to georef were 103MB .tif files.

The solution, I cropped it down in Ps and it would georef just fine. Definitely a software issue.

Thanks Dan and Darren for the quick responses!
