Story map - is there a limit in importing raster data?

I would like to generate a Story Map Swipe representing changes in the time. However, when I imported raster files which are stored as *.sd files in my server I am not able to save the generated story map. I think that the problem might be with the size of my sd file (4 sd files which have: 1.8GB, 1.7GB, 1.1GB, and 1.0GB, the *.sd files store raster TIFF files which have 11GB, 11GB, 1GB, and 1GB). I imported these raster as Web Map - all rasters are stored in one Web Map. Is this might be the reason why I cannot save my story map, or is it something else? Thank you in advance for help.

Hi Emmanuel,

I believe your issue may be related to a known issue with the Swipe app and labels. Karolina Korzeniowska -- there's a possibility this might have something to do with your issue as well as I noticed one of your maps also contains a layer with labels.

Can you both try removing the labels in your services and trying to create/save the Swipe app again? Once the app is saved you can re-enable the labels. This issue is scheduled to be fixed in the upcoming June release of ArcGIS Online.

I have almost the same problem.. I have two web maps, each one containing one orthophoto (249Mb and 76Mb)... And it keeps telling me (for days) "Saving story...."

Hi Karolina and Emmanuel,

Sorry you are having an issue with your Swipe story. Could you both please share links to your applications so I can take a look?

Dear Owen,

the problem is that I cannot give you a link to my original story map, because when I try to import the web map as a layer in my story map, and then try to save the story map, it is saving, saving, and saving.... and cannot save it. Without a content I cannot create and save my story map. Temporarily I found a way how to avoid this never ending saving error. I created and imported into story map two web maps (instead of one web like before) settings>swipe type>two web maps. However, it works only when my web maps contain only one layer each of them (one raster or one shapefile file). When I tried to import more layers into my web maps (even some small shapefile with few points) the never ending saving error occurred again. Here I attach the link to my temporarily created story map http://arcg.is/206jQaG

Hi Karolina,

Oops, I mean to ask you to share your web map(s), not your app (since you can't save one). Sorry! However, I was able to grab the web map IDs from the Swipe app link you just shared above and took a look at them...

The imagery layers don't load for me if I just open the maps in the arcgis.com map viewer. Although I can ping the server where the services are running I'm not able to access the services themselves or even the services directory -- I just keep getting timeout errors. That leads me to suspect there is something going on with the server that's preventing the save. At this point I'll have to refer you to Esri Tech Support who can do further and more detailed troubleshooting.

A few things to try...

  • I noticed the services in your web maps are map services -- since you are publishing imagery have you considered publishing your data as image services? These would be much more efficient at serving our your landsat data.
  • Esri's Living Atlas contains many published LandSat services. There may already be a service you can use here so you wouldn't need to publish your own service?

Dear Owen,

I removed the layer with labels any created a new swipe app with only two raster layers. The app works, it works also when (after creating the swipe app) I edited my web map and added additional shapefile layer. I also created image services instead of map services as you suggested. However, here some problem occurred. The colors of my one raster map comparing to my original raster map has changed (bare ground is green and glaciers are blue), and I do not know why and how it happen, because I created image services for both rasters the same way. Please look at my app http://arcg.is/1V0HohC Do you know maybe how to solve this issue?

Regarding the Living Atlas, I cannot use it, because I need Landsat images from selected previously two time periods.

Hi Karolin,

I'm glad your Swipe app is working now! Unfortunately troubleshooting the issues you described with your image services is out of my range of expertise. I'd suggest posting that question to one of these communities on GeoNet:
