The Alaska geograpic transformations do not seem to be working in ArcGIS 10.4.

I may be overlooking something, but the Alaska geographic transformations do not seem to be working in ArcGIS 10.4.

In going from NAD27 to NAD83, I'm using the transformation:
  NAD_27_To_NAD_1983_Alaska

When I open an mxd project in ArcGIS 10.2, the NAD27 polygons are projected on the fly correctly to their corresponding NAD83 positions.

When I open the same mxd project in ArcGIS 10.4, the NAD27 polygons are projected on the fly incorrectly.

In ArcGIS 10.4, the NAD27 polygons appear to be projected on the fly by using the NADCON (lower 48) transformation instead of the 'NAD_27_To_NAD_1983_Alaska' transformation that is set in the project.

The same problem occurs in trying to use the 'Project' tool to project the data to NAD83.  The polygons appear to be projected using the NADCON (lower 48) transformation.

In this example, I'm going from

   NAD_1927_StatePlane_Alaska_6_FIPS_5006

to

  NAD_1983_StatePlane_Alaska_6_FIPS_5006_Feet

by trying to use the 'NAD_27_To_NAD_1983_Alaska' transformation

I've read somewhere that, new to ArcGIS 10.4, ArcGIS 10.4 is supposed to 'sense' the position of the data and, somehow, automatically apply the correct nadcon transformation.

Is this a bug in ArcGIS 10.4, or am I overlooking something?

Other Alaska transformations appear to have the same problem in ArcGIS 10.4

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

I think there is indeed a bug, I'm having the same exact issue since upgrading to 10.4.

Rebecca Strauch, GISP  Rebecca, do you have any scoop on this?  This thread has been floating around for a while.

I'm not an expert on projections and/or transformations, and haven't fully upgraded to 10.4...so no experience yet.

The thread you mentioned Dan has to two I would recommend giving the best info Melita Kennedy  and Joel Cusick   but I'll also tag the Alaska GIS Users site in case others have insight and/or are interested.

Thanks Dan,

And can you look into when they are going to solve the ArcScene not exporting a 3D VMRL file correctly as well? I know that’s an ongoing issue and I tried for the first time with 10.4 yesterday and it was still a problem.

Cheers,

Frank

you mean there are problems with this in Exporting a 3D VRML model in ArcScene—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop

If so, I didn't hear anything... probably a projection problem

but Pro's documentation... Supported formats with the Data Interoperability extension—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS for Desktop  has two incarnations of VRML one a reader and a new version as a writer but I haven't tested it

Yes, I was on the phone with tech support about this issue earlier in the year and they told me it was a known issue. The file created is empty of content, I’ll have to see if I can find my email from tech support on this for reference

Thanks! And FYI, a co-worker of mine is having the same exact issue as well since upgrading to 10.4.
