I do a lot of selecting and updating, but I just want to write a new feature (add a row) based on values from another feature class

You could play with the arcpy.da.editor Editor—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop

or just the da.insertcursor option InsertCursor—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop

depends on what you want to do, there are other options depending on where you data are (aka merge)

Thanks, I am working with big (4-6gb) feature classes and a simple load in ArcCatalog fails.   I will check out insertCursor.

Why does load fail? What is the error? It should work.

Are the input and target the same type / coord sys / attributes???

da.InsertCursor will also work, but that seems a long way around to do what the standard tools will do.
