I want to share some watersheds I delineated in ArcGIS Desktop 9, and I was able to upload them to My Content in ArcGIS Online, but when I try to add them to my topo basemap, it won't allow me to find or search for them when I try to Add.  How can I get lyr files into ArcGIS Online?

The only types of data you can add to a web map are: services (map, feature, wms), KML files, zipped Shapefiles, CSV files, and GPX files. These types can be added directly to the map from the Add menu button when viewing a map. Here's some information about creating maps:

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, thanks for the reply.  I went back into ArcMap for Desktop 9, and was able to export my watershed as a shapefile.  Unfortunately, it saved SEVEN different files!!!  They have extensions of .dbf .prj . sbn .sbx .shp and another .shp and .shx.  I zipped all of them into a single zipped folder, and uploaded that to My Content.  It still won't let me add it to my map.

Is there a particular way I should zip this stuff up?  Thanks for any help, Chris

Even stranger, I was able to upload my shapefile just fine in ArcGIS Explorer online, and it shows up great.

Seems like you were able to get your shapefile loaded into a map. The web map can be opened in either arcgis.com map viewer or explorer online. To add the shapefile in the map viewer,  click the Add button and click Add Layer from File. Then browse to the shapefile.

Thanks,

Mike

I had an area that I wanted for an overlay from a jpeg. I saved my lyr in ArcMap. From this discussion I thought I could use the toolbox in ArcMap to convert to KML and then add to my ArcGIS Online map. It looks like it worked. I am working on an online illustrated map from a Photoshop image to 'smooth' two map schemas used. Thanks for the hints!
