The Alaska geograpic transformations do not seem to be working in ArcGIS 10.4.

I may be overlooking something, but the Alaska geographic transformations do not seem to be working in ArcGIS 10.4.

In going from NAD27 to NAD83, I'm using the transformation:
  NAD_27_To_NAD_1983_Alaska

When I open an mxd project in ArcGIS 10.2, the NAD27 polygons are projected on the fly correctly to their corresponding NAD83 positions.

When I open the same mxd project in ArcGIS 10.4, the NAD27 polygons are projected on the fly incorrectly.

In ArcGIS 10.4, the NAD27 polygons appear to be projected on the fly by using the NADCON (lower 48) transformation instead of the 'NAD_27_To_NAD_1983_Alaska' transformation that is set in the project.

The same problem occurs in trying to use the 'Project' tool to project the data to NAD83.  The polygons appear to be projected using the NADCON (lower 48) transformation.

In this example, I'm going from

   NAD_1927_StatePlane_Alaska_6_FIPS_5006

to

  NAD_1983_StatePlane_Alaska_6_FIPS_5006_Feet

by trying to use the 'NAD_27_To_NAD_1983_Alaska' transformation

I've read somewhere that, new to ArcGIS 10.4, ArcGIS 10.4 is supposed to 'sense' the position of the data and, somehow, automatically apply the correct nadcon transformation.

Is this a bug in ArcGIS 10.4, or am I overlooking something?

Other Alaska transformations appear to have the same problem in ArcGIS 10.4

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

Good to know....even if that isn't necessarily good news.  I typically work with Alaska Albers, not State Plane, but if there are issues, that is another reason to hold off on upgrading to 10.4.

Too late for a bunch of us ☹ We work mostly in State Plane and for some reason still get people giving us data in NAD 27 so this is a big deal to us.

Yes, it's a bug, BUG-000096290. The NADCON/HARN Alaska, Guam, Rota, and Saipan grid files are not working. The bug is in 10.4.1 as well. We have a fix that we're currently testing in development and are working to get a hot-fix/patch out as soon as we can.

What happens when you add a projected shapefile to the map? What does the map show as a cord system?

The new shapefile’s properties say the file is in the new projection (NAD83) even though the points are still in the old NAD27 locations.

It looks like the transformation is working, but coordinates are not changed. Internally, the grid file's extent is messed up so points in Alaska (for instance) aren't found to be inside the grid file's extent. It affected Alaska because the grid file crosses the date line. Samoa and the Mariana grids were affected because of another check that's done for American Samoa. However, American Samoa's grid file is working (as is Hawaii's).

UPDATE, 14 June 2016: The 10.4.0 patches for Desktop, Server, Engine, Reader, Server (Linux), Background processing for Desktop and Server should be available later this week/early next week. Engine (Linux) is still being worked on.

UPDATE, 16 June 2016: I've verified the 10.4.1 patches except for the Engine (Linux)--it's also still being worked on.

We're currently waiting for someone to approve the website page's text, etc. We do not plan to wait for the Engine (Linux) patches before making the rest available.
