Story Map Shortlist: Problems with displaying location

I created a story map shortlist from scratch using latitude/longitude and addresses. The first problem is that there are some places that will not appear in View Story/public viewing even though they had the image and the location, and had been refreshed numerous times. Under a tab, most places were displayed, but a few were not. Under another tab, all of the places were not displayed. The images were all set in public (under Flickr). I have tried restarting the application then re-add the places in, but it didn't work. I've attached a photo showing the editing mode on the left (with the locations), and View Story mode on the right (nothing was displayed).

The second problem is that when I add a lat/long or address, other places (these are points that I had added in earlier) somehow used that new address and I have to redo their addresses.

I just want to point out the second problem, and I would really appreciate it if someone can help me solve the first problem. Thanks!

Apologies again for the issue.  After doing lots of digging, I have been able to reproduce and diagnose the problem, which is a bug on our side.  Unfortunately this fix will not show up until our next release (early December), but a work around is available.

Workaround:

1.  Open the web map used in the Shortlist app in the ArcGIS online web map viewer.

2.  Click 'Share' button, then 'Create a web App' button.

3.  Pick the Shortlist app.

4.  The Shortlist will then launch in a mode that will allow you to use your existing Shortlist point layer as the data source.  The app will copy the web map to a new web map, preserving all of the work you did in adding places and all of its information.  You should then be able to continue adding places successfully.

We hope this is a reasonable solution to your problem and does not eat up anymore of your time.  Let us know if you have any issues with this work around and we will do our best to get you back on track.

Not sure if this is what you were asking but I figured out that you have to zoom out with all your entries in view to have it shown on the side tab view.

Hi Meyer,

Thanks for the idea. I zoomed out to the entire U.S. and saved, but some of those entries still didn't show up.

Hi Liling,

Sorry you are experiencing problems with the Shortlist app.  To clarify the difference between builder and viewer, to show up in the viewer, each place must have a location, picture, AND name.  I see that in the screenshots you provided that the 'save' button is enabled.  When I look at the web map used in your Shortlist, their are no locations in Nevada, so it does not look like these were written to the web map.  The Shortlist App does not auto save, and any changes made in the builder must be saved in order to show up in the viewer (even for preview mode).

As for the second problem, could you please elaborate on the steps used to recreate this issue?  We have not seen/heard of this before.

Hi Mark,

It's still a pretty great app! Love the clean layout of it. I get that with beta, you'll run into problems. I believe I did save the places that I added (the Save button renews when I switch tabs). Just in case I didn't save or the app crashed and I wasn't aware of that, I reopened the Editor mode, re-added in the places, and saved again. The new places still didn't show up in the viewer.

For the second problem: I added some places under one tab - Nevada (all in different places of Nevada). I saved, and then I added some places in another tab - Utah (which are in Utah). Then somehow, the places that were in Nevada had the address of the last Utah place I added.

Puzzled,

Liling

Hello Mark,

I'm running with the same problem. I've tried the workaround, but it doesn't work for me. I noticed that the error persists only for the collapsed tabs of the shortlist app. I even created a second the shortlist app from the web map that was created from the first shortlist app, and I got the same problem.

I really would appreciate if I can get this resolved. Thanks in advance.

Regards,

José

Hi Jose,

Sorry for the inconvenience.  The good news is that the fix will show up early next week with the coming update, so your Shortlist will function properly then.  If you cannot wait until then, and if you are able to host the app yourself on a server, an updated version of the code can be found on GitHub Release V2.0.2 · Esri/shortlist-storytelling-template-js · GitHub .

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your quick response. I'll try hosting the app on a server until I wait anxiously the next release for the Shortlist template.

All the best,

Jose
