We have are drawings in AutoCAD files right know and would like to bring the mains, valves and hydrant over to ArcMap 10.1. My question is on the main segments what the best practice of drawing the segments. Our goal is to identify a main with a water main break and it would show us which valves would be shut off.
1. from valve to valve
2. Fitting to fitting
3. Where you have a 3 or a 4-way valve package - would there be like 3 or 4 small segments?
4. Can you go from tee to tee and if you have an inline valve go through the valve or stop the segment at the valve and have two segments.

Here are some recommandations

    Break Mains at

      All wPressurizedMains intersections

      Fittings

        Cross

        Reducer

        Tee

      System valves

        pressure reducer valves

        pressure (zone) separation valves

        reservoir valves

        system separation (normally closed)

        altitude valves

      Pump stations

      Treatment plant

      Reservoir

    Do NOT break Mains at

      Fittings

        Bend

        Tap

        Wye

        Clamp

      Laterals or lateral services

      Normally open system valves

      Check valves

      Connection points

Hi  Tsvatos

We have chosen to break mains

  • at all fittings

  • valves

  • hydrants (our hydrants are cut in on the mains.. not laterals)

  • Pumps/resevoirs/flowmeters

we don't break for water services.

if i was to re invent the data model I would probably do exactly what MikeMiller is sugesting reasons for

  • Too many assets in our asset system

  • simplicity of data capture

  • doesn't effect modeling requirments
