How fast does ArcGIS start?

I have a customer that runs ArcGIS and he is disappointed with how fast it starts. He has a system that is nearly equivalent with one that a colleague has that starts it in 9 seconds and his starts in 19 seconds.  Both systems are Intel Core i7 3.x GHz CPUs, 16G memory, 500G SSDs, and Quadro 600 (K620) video cards. He would like it to start more quickly.  Are there any thoughts on how to shave 10 seconds of start time off?  Thank you.

Corey,

Have him try and delete the Normal.mxt from the C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\ESRI\Desktop10.4\ArcMap\Templates folder and then restart ArcMap and it will recreate the mxt and many times ArcMap will start faster if it is just a simple template corruption.

I deleted this file. However, when I started up ArcGIS, it took 17 seconds.  This time I watched as it said Initializing License which took all of 8 seconds. The rest of the time was initializing the application.  So, does that give us a clue as to what is taking a long time?  Is license init supposed to take 8 seconds?  Or is that normal?

are you using a concurrent license?  This has helped in our offices (had to take a snapshot from one of docs...hope you can read it)

If it's a single use license, I'm not sure if that will help or not....but may still be worth a try.

I added the variable and started ArcGIS, but there was no change - still 8 seconds of Initializing License. Do I need to reboot for the variable to be applied in Windows or is it immediate after setting it?  This is a single license.

There is some talk of "borrowing" a license for laptops for offline use. If that is the case, can I simply "borrow" the license permanently for this desktop system so there is no need to Initialize it?  How long does it take for you or others to initialize your license when you start ArcGIS?

I workstand standalone, disconnected and 8 to 10 seconds sounds about right to start arcmap.

I have geoprocessing logging turned off.

I delete my results window frequently throughout the day and on that rare event that I finish for the day.

I reboot every couple of hours... because I like to make sure that there is a free start regularly.

When I click, the arcmap or Pro icon .... I simply get coffee...

Dan, I meant the startup process that says Initializing License portion alone takes 8 seconds.  The entire startup process takes 17 seconds.  It used to take 19 seconds, but deleting the Normal.mxt template took off 2 seconds from the startup. His colleague working for another entity report that she only take 8-9 seconds to start and they have equivalent PCs.  Are you saying that the entire start process of 8 to 10 seconds is right or just the initializing license portion only?

For me it is about 10 seconds for the whole process.  As I said, there is no web communication to initialize, since I am pure standalone.  I also don't use aby basemaps so I wonder if initializing access to those takes time

Does he do a lot of geoprocessing and/or run other tools?  Have him open the Results table

  -> Geoprocessing ->Reults

Clean out the results. And then close the software  (ArcMap and/or ArcCatalog)

It might start up faster on reopening.

You can modify how long you want to keep the results in the Geoprocessing Options

I like to keep mine, especially when developing and testing so I can review and/or grab code snippets.  But I do have to clean my Results table often, especially if I've run a lot of tasks that display a lot of comments (again, I use a lot of arcpy.AddMessage lines when testing and debugging).

This is one thing I would try.

The other thing that is always good if this doesn't help  https://community.esri.com/docs/DOC-2121?sr=search&searchId=7d9bde88-0f35-4640-bc88-d232f1f9d99f&sea...
