Hello.

I have been told by an employee at Esri that the ArcGIS Explorer Desktop product will no longer be supported in the future, and that it will only exist as an online viewer.  I assume this would be http://www.arcgis.com/explorer/.  Can someone from Esri on this forum confirm that the Desktop Explorer is being officially discontinued, and if so, when that will happen?

The main reason I am asking this is because I use Explorer Desktop in some of my college teaching.  I would like to know if it's going away (and when) before I spend the time updating GIS exercises for my students.

Thanks,

Correct me if I have been misinformed, but two ESRI representatives including our own personal rep told me that ArcGIS Explorer has been retired and is no longer supported as of 12/2013. The functionality that we came to know as Arc Explorer has been rolled into Arc Reader now. The Arc Reader program does roll out with each ArcGIS update and is named as such. Arc Reader 10.2.1. I am researching this as a fix to the multiple and diverse issues we are now experiencing with Arc Explorer 2500 version.

Is this true? I will be looking to see what this Arc Next is that was discussed earlier. We also have the issue of very rural slow internet speeds with a need for low cost desktop applications that play nice with IE 10 and 11.

ArcGIS Explorer Desktop 2500 is still supported and new updates will be available soon.

As I mentioned in this thread, can you test explorer off of your network, and do you still experience the problems, or do the problems only occur when connected to your network?  If the problem only occurs when connected to your network, can you identify anything that may have change on your network around 3/8/14?

As far as the confusion in regards to support.
Other products from Esri with "Explorer"  in the name are:

Arc Explorer - The last release was 9.3.1 - it is no longer supported.
ArcGIS Explorer Online - Retired December 10, 2013.

Mark,

Maybe it is the two windows 8.1 machines I have tried so far. Yes I can install the program, however, it breaks soon there after, after using it with pre existing maps, and after a few reboots.

If I am wrong it would be wonderful, I will reinstall it again and see if the problem persists, and if it does we can maybe do a TeamViewer or GoToAssist session. Maybe there is something missing on both the box and tablet, but I can't imagine what it is.

Mark I am eagerly awaiting the next release, but my users are jumping ship, all of them switched to 8.1 Dell XPS 12 tablets early this year, they still have to do their work in the field, so they couldn't wait.

Best Regards,

John

Mark,

I was able to install AGX on both a desktop and a tablet on Windows 8.1 using the instructions listed here.

http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/88885-Installing-ArcGIS-Explorer-2500-on-Windows-8.1-preview?p=3541...

The program opened and seemed to work fine, and I saved a map, then after closing it and shutting the PC's down and rebooting them, now when I try to open the program from the desktop icon, the splash screen sits there and the program doesn't open any more.

If I go into task manager and end task on AGX then in Windows Explorer I navigate to the file I saved, when I try to reopen it I get the same situation, the splash screen just sits there and the program never opens. This same situation happens both on the PC and the tablet.

any advice?

Mark,

More information about the problem, I navigated to a file that had been saved from AGX 2500 on a windows 7 machine and it opened on the tablet, but not on the PC. I then ended the task again on the PC and tried again and then it worked. I am letting it sit for about 3 minutes when I determine it won't open.

Maybe it would have worked before if I kept ending task and trying again. . . I will test the programs and report back if the flashing problem happens again.

AGX opening on 8/8.1 has been and continues to be an issue. There are a few threads about this. Basically you have to keep task manager open and open AGX, close E3.exe, open AGX, close E3.exe, rinse and repeat. I went back to Windows 7 and have had no issues.

Some issues addressed with this patch. After dropping the spatial index on a feature class in a database that was upgraded to ArcGIS 10.1, update operations return an ORA-20085 error.

Yes, this is exactly the issue I am having, and even with Build 2505. I open it, it locks up, I close it in task manager, then I open it again, and repeat, and eventually it will open.

Hello ESRI.

The last release of ArcGIS Explorer Desktop for Windows was Build 3400 in 2015.

Are there plans for any future development.?
