Trying to clip lines from points

I have a, hopefully, basic question.  I have buffered lines connected to points from which I have then clipped from a vegetation and land use characterization layer that I converted from a raster to a polygon in order to do the clipping and get areas of each vegetation type within the buffered lines and points.

I have successfully clipped the points but I want to know if there is a way I can get the information contained in just the line portion and exclude what is in the buffered. I've tried using the clipping tool but I cannot figure out how to just get the line portion and not the point portion of the polygon (i.e. Basically clip the points from the line and get the habitat information contained in the lines.

Let me know if you need any more information, thank you in advance!

It's a bit confusing, so as Jayanta mentioned, pics would help.

How I'm reading it, is

  • you have a polygon layer of veg/lu that was create my clipping the raster with a buffer (created from a line feature) and converted to a polygon
  • you have a point layer (of what?)
  • and you have a line layer.

it sounds like you maybe

  • ran point in poly or some other method to get the values/information from the veg/lu poly layer

and now you are trying to do the same for the line features?  Is that even close to what you are trying to do?

You may want to look at the different options in the An overview of the Overlay toolset—Help | ArcGIS Desktop

in particular maybe Intersect—Help | ArcGIS Desktop   or the Spatial Join—Help | ArcGIS Desktop   if you are trying to attach the attributes from the veg/lu layer to the line features.

I may be way off what you are tryin gto do...if so, please provide additional info.
