Hi all,

I have been delivered many raw data and GIS data from  geophysical survey.

I need to export some seabed profile data but the MBES folder has xyz data which I am not able to open with a notepad as the file is huge (I believe this is the reason).

Is there any chance I could have access to the xyz info from the GIS layer I have? Is there any way to export the xyz from there and make my life easier?

I have ArcGIS 10.2 with Spatial Analyst.

Many thanks

F

Hi Francesca,

I'm curious if you have an idea of how many rows of data are within the raw data? I could be wrong but I believe that Notepad is capable of opening files around the 0.5GB mark.

What is your intent with the raw xyz data? Are you planning on making contours or raster surface of the seabed?

It could take you quite a bit of time, but this may be an option for you. In ArcMap you can Add XY Data through the File Tab. It is only an instance so after the points are loaded, you'd have to export them as a shapefile or feature class.

Hi Brandon,

may thanks for your reply.

I do not know how many rows and columns but I believe many as it is a survey of a very long submarine cable.

My intent is to export the slope and seabed profile to be in order to make a simple graph in excel for a report.

Is it possible to make the job from the DTM I have in ArcGIS rather than loading the points from the raw data package?

Cheers,

F

Check out this ESRI Help Page. It might be a solution for you. ArcGIS Desktop Help 9.3 - Creating profile graphs

However, it does require a 3D Analyst License.

ArcMap 10: How to create Profiles using a DEM - Channel cross sections! Ground Truthing! YAY - YouTu...

This may help as well.

If it is a text file with conventional x,y,z format, did you try

http://desktop.arcgis.com/en/arcmap/latest/map/working-with-layers/adding-x-y-coordinate-data-as-a-l...

to make an event layer?

Hi Dan,

this is a very good idea and I will try it once I will have access to the hard drive again.

Thanks a lot for your help,
