How to add services from a federated hosting server to ArcGIS for AutoCAD 350?

Hi,

I have previously used ArcGIS for AutoCAD with no issues and found it very useful. I now have Portal and have federated my server. This means that ArcGIS for AutoCAD can no longer access the services as the generateToken call made by the application does not hit the server location. Instead it needs to trace through to the portal token service. As such

1) is there way I can get ArcGIS for AutoCAD to hit the portal token service?

2) is there a way I can change the ArcGIS Online url to hit portal instead?

3) is there a way I can embed a long lived token for my services into the ArcGIS for AutoCAD?

Thanks for your help,

CD Brown

ArcGIS for AutoCAD 350 cannot access enterprise servers federated with Portal for ArcGIS.  The next release of ArcGIS for AutoCAD 355 available very soon will be able to access ONLY the services shared with everyone on a portal federated server.  Any user accessing those services would need to be authenticated by Portal for ArcGIS.  In a future release we hope to add better support for portal managed services.

Hi Don,

I have a similar setup as Christopher, federated ArcGIS server (10.3.1) with Portal, and I have just installed ArcGIS for AutoCAD 355 along with AutoCAD 2016 to see if we can now use our map services but am still running into the same issues.  Is there any documentation for a workflow involving secured services on a federated Server?  If I enter the Portal URL in the server connection information, I get the error that it is not a valid server URL.  However, I cannot access the Server directly because of the federation with Portal... please advise.  Thanks

You should be able to access secure services on enterprise servers federated with portal, but only when the item is shared with “everyone” in the org. The item will be “secured” with the portal authentication, but ArcGIS for AutoCAD 355 doesn’t yet understand how to navigate the “named” user. So even though you use “your” login for portal with ArcGIS for AutoCAD you will only see those items shared with “everyone” in the organization. This is obviously less than ideal. Better support for Portal federated servers and named users will be coming in future releases.

Hi Don, I have been testing ArcGIS For Autocad 365 2017 with Autocad Map 3D 2015 and I still have the same behavior that Christopher and David. I have ArcGIS Enterprise 10.5 with federated ArcGIS Server also registered as hosting Server. when I try to connect to the server I always get the services that were shared to: "Public (Everyone)" no matter if I provide credentials (from the Portal) or not.

Is this behavior normal yet on this version? or is anything not working ok?

thanks in advance

Kevin,

Correct, ArcGIS for AutoCAD 365 still does not address the identity of the user for portal federated services.   The portal will be used to validate the credentials of the user and you can see services shared with everyone in the org, but ArcGIS for AutoCAD will not understand the idea of "My Content" or "Groups" until the next release, likely named ArcGIS for AutoCAD 375.    Support for hosted services will not be available until the release after that one, likely named ArcGIS for AutoCAD 400.

Dan,

I am using Autocad 2017 with ArcGIS for Autocad 370. I will have the issue in adding Portal Federated server in Autocad. Does that mean ArcGIS for Autocad 370 still have not solved the named user issue?

Thanks

Helen

Helen,

You can currently access enterprise server services that are federated with your Portal.

ArcGIS for AutoCAD will prompt you for your credentials to access the portal.

ArcGIS for AutoCAD 370 currently does not understand your identity within the Portal so you will only see items (services) that have been shared with everyone in the organization.

The next release of ArcGIS for AutoCAD 400 will have a full concept of identity so you will be able to directly access your content and layers shared with you and your groups. This next release will also add support for hosted services both in Portal and Online. Currently ArcGIS for AutoCAD 370 does not support Hosted Services.

Thanks Don, Do you know the estimate release time frame for ArcGIS for AutoCAD 400? Thanks

Helen

FYI..

The status of Esri BUG-000095939 - Secured OGC services from an ArcGIS for Server federated with Portal for ArcGIS cannot be accessed unless both the OGC and corresponding map service are shared to 'Everyone' in the My Content interface. - that you have been associated with has been changed to Not in Current Product Plan.

Public Explanation: The OGC specifications for WMS and WFS services do not allow for OAuth2 authentication which is fully supported by Portal.  In an environment where Server is federated with Portal, secured WMS or WFS services require authentication from Portal and support for OAuth2 would be needed.  Until the OGC specifications and corresponding client applications are updated to support OAuth2, secured OGC services can only be provided from an un-federated ArcGIS Server using web-tier authentication.
