Michael - have you purchased ArcGIS Desktop?  If not, you must first purchase the software from Esri and then you'll have the ability to install the software on your desktop/laptop.  With regard to your account, did you create a ArcGIS Online Public Account to create simple maps?

Adding to Robert LeClair‌, if your account is a trial ArcGIS account, you will not get a trial of ArcMap anymore. With an ArcGIS trial, now one gets a 21 days license of ArcGIS Pro (ArcGIS Desktop).

And if you could clarify what account you are referring to, we might be able to guide you in the right direction.

True with the 21 day trial but if you want to explore the ArcGIS for Personal Use, you do get both ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro for $100 per year (in addition to other items).  Caveat to this purchase is it's only for personal use and not commercial gain.
