Is it possible to remove BAG files from a BIS once they have been added to it?

I can't find anywhere in the Maritime: Bathymetry help that explains how to remove a BAG file from the BIS database.   I am trying to develop a training package that details the workflow between Fledermaus and the ESRI BIS database.  I would like to be able to remove the training bag datasets from within the BIS.  Is it possible to remove BAG files from a BIS once they have been added to it?

Hello Aaron,

At present, there is no capability to explicitly delete registered datasets from the BIS. One way you could achieve this though, is by creating an extended metadata field that filters out the training datasets such that you could apply it in Explore Bathymetry not to include them in your process.

The reason for not allowing to remove a dataset once it is loaded is for traceability. Essentially, the solution is the data store for every historical dataset managed by the organization. If a dataset is no longer needed, simply don't use it in your surface models. But if it has been used in the past for data export, or within a surface model, it needs to remain in the data store, so that users can come back, query the data store, and find out where the exported data came from.
As Sabeshan explains, if an organization really want to emulate teh deletion of a dataset, simply have a "deleted" or "hidden" field in teh extended metadata, and use it to filter out datasets from the view.

Thank you both for your responses.   I think that I am on the right track now.

Since you cannot remove datasets, what is the recommended workflow for cases where you get updated files (with the same name) with new/more data and you want to replace existing datasets?

Typically, you get a first delivery (preliminary data), then after some time you get official datasets and want to replace the preliminary datasets. Maybe you get some offical files now, and some later. Just using Mosaic Datasets, I would use windows copy to replace the old files with the new files and then run the Synchronize tool.

Hi Kjetil,

If you wish to update datasets with new information, you could replace the files as you have pointed out. You might need to refresh your BDI though as the overviews would be stale and re-save your surface model(s) using these datasets so that the saved mosaic dataset is updated. A better alternative would be to use a different name for your new dataset and add it to your BIS. The benefit of doing this is that you can query for the latest data in your area of interest and update your surface model whilst also have the opportunity to refer to the older version of the survey should you need to do so in the future.

Cheers,
Sabeshan
