Agreed; it would also make sense if we could verify our expressions in the field calculator prior to running them, as is aready the case w/ labelling expressions.

There might be some workarounds for you. Regarding #1, once the PDF is created, if you open it and press <F4> the Acrobat side panel can show not just pages but also bookmarks and layers, where visibility of individual layers can be toggled. Though I have a full version of Acrobat this also seemed to work in Reader Regarding #2, I learned the hard way that having ANY transparency (or picture fill symbology, or 3-D symbology if I rightly recall) set in ANY map layer of ANY type will rasterize & flatten the output no matter what settings you try. Doesn't even matter if the layer is being used in your output -if it's in the TOC it will junk up your PDF output. See this Idea See also this Desktop Help from v. 10.0

Even though ESRI will not act on this I feel compelled to ask anyway: Would it be possible to make the desktop interface of ESRI products behave even if a Windows user sets a custom font size under the screen resolution options? I prefer to use an intermediate size, which works well with everything else installed on the PC, but with ESRI causes problems with the user interface: directories, such as the Table of contents as well as catalog and toolbox items, plus the stand-alone ArcCatalog show items with GINORMOUS text sizes, while menu bars, etc. display very tiny font sizes and point several inches away from where the mouse pointer actually is, causing me to accidentally click on the wrong choices. The only solution is to go with Windows preset font magnifications, which are either much too large or much too small. I have to pattern the rest of my PC use around the limitations with ESRI's interface, and it's not much of a solution in my opinion. Frustrating.

Currently we can use definition queries to form subsets and save them as layers which can be brought into a TOC and grouped as we please. The downside of that, besides managing separate layer files, is that the records subset is static for any layer file, and if attributes change the records membership in the layer does not reflect that. Why not make it possible in the symbology tab, under 'Multiple Attributes' to enter query expressions, such as 'NUM_HOUSEHOLDS' > 'AREA_ACRES' or 'ZONING_DISTRICT' <> 'COMMERCIAL' AND 'ELEV' > 500 ? Thus we could enjoy the combined benefits of queries, categories and quantities all in one dynamic symbology.

Possibly I'm not grasping the difficulty, but FYI you might look at the APPEND geoprocessing tool, the simple object loader, or other ways to get around the problem.

Agreed. Additionally there should be a more intelligent way to concatenate for labeling expressions, with conditional behavior based on whether a prefix direction field, e.g. is NULL.

Rather than having to glean bookmarks from saved bookmark files, it would make sense to be able to import then directly from other .mxd project files. We can already do something similar with feature symbology, so why not also with bookmarks?

Maybe I don't understand, but it sounds like you're talking about performing an interect on buffers, something that could easily be automated by joining the processes in ModelBuilder. Either that, or you might be able to create the desired buffers by trying different tool settings, such as dissolve. (I am dismayed to see some side_type and end_type options are only available with the ArcInfo license)
