Nice! Thanks for the added info. Pretty crazy this is still an issue so many years later but I’m sure it will be a continued resource. Aaron Kreag, GISP

From folks I have worked with in the past this is common, usually any attempt to clean or build a solid GIS data set ends up with a similar result. Its common on the tax assessor side as often times properties exist or improvements made that are not recorded right if at all...resulting in an increase in tax revenue. I would be interested to hear how you move through this exercise.

David, A couple thoughts. Unfortunately your suggestion (as well as others) did not solve our problem, nor did ESRI solve the problem. Have you submitted your solution to ESRI? While I appreciate your feedback / input, the fact is that our geometry data type on SQL 2012 has been and continues to be a disaster. By simply moving the same data back to SQL 2008R2 the problem simply disappears and it doesn't matter if the data is in SDEbinary or Geometry. Hence my comment. Second, there is an expectation by the user community that the compatibility, performance and functionality of the approved versions of ESRI and SQL Server work...out of the box, without the need for experimenting with settings. If we are going down that path, we may as well just go back to Server / SDE at 9.1, and IMS. I think the great majority of folks that are hitting these forums, looking for answers are the same people that are feeling their way through an implementation or migration. My posting here is probably more a cautionary tale than anything else. I am still wondering if SQL 2014 is any better out of the box and expect to test that soon.

We have had an open ticket about this since August 2014. ESRI support worked with us....I would say more than usual so I give them an A for effort but the problem persists despite a whole laundry list of trials, scripts, and changes. The fact remains that SDE performance was better at SQL2008R2. Nobody knows why. Our hypothesis is that internal engineering changes to MS SQL Server were not adequately flushed out with spatial data. We edit in 2008R2/SDE Binary and use scripts to push to 2012/Geometry for publishing. I am starting a SQL2014 test today! Have the VM's spun up, I am going to start software install in a little bit. Regardless of what happens I will post my findings here afterwards. Thank you!

Paul, Yes, we are using HyperV. OS is MS 2012. We also try to do a weekly reboot of all our servers as I have heard mumblings around the community of chronic hung soc processes and memory leaks with the 2 java platform SE binary processes that run. Aaron

ESRI was insistent that it needed to be set to system managed with enough RAM available and then some. When we switched from it being hard set at 16GB to system managed, rebooted we saw immediate improvement in performance and stability. Sent via the Samsung Galaxy Note® 3, an AT&T 4G LTE smartphone

Ok. That makes sense. I don't envy you right now. lol. Yes, try that 1 and 5 and personally I would keep it set at high. What you may actually see....which I have seen prior, bumped up to max 9 and had like half of my services running at 9 most of the day so we added more CPU and RAM and upped it again to 13 and that resulted in like 1/3 running maxed out. Honestly, its very easy to under-estimate demand/load. You may see the same on your end. Don't be surprised if you are going back to IT and asking for more CPU and more RAM....you may have to adjust it a few times to get the best performance. Remember to make sure the virtual memory is set to system managed.

Yes ESRI recommends the Min 1 and Max 5 given your set up. Then monitor it to see what services are being pegged at 5 in server manager...look at running and not in use. Also watch RAM too because it will creep up. What may be happening is if you are set to Min 1 and Max 1 and you have that many services, there is probably a huge request cue that is backing up. That will kill it. Its a delicate balance between CPU and RAM. The soc process are more RAM dependent but if you do not have enough of them available to service requests than your CPU and network will take a big hit hit. Also, if you have requests that are sitting in a request cue, this will affect the service stability and have a negative impact on the ability to publish or edit services too. If you were paying me for help I would say edit all services so 1 and 5, have IT on standby to add more resources. Once that is done and if all the things I mentioned above are done or checked off the list and its still messing up, call me...or ESRI. I would also ask why so many services. We did a study here where we took one map service with 8 layers and split it into 2 map services with 4 layers and we had zero performance gain. I would usually recommend having less services with more data if possible.

ESRI told me no more than 200 services in a site. For that many services my guess out of the gate is that you are lacking resources. We have a separate web server and separate DB server. We have 60 services running on one app server and sit at about 35GB of 64GB RAM usage in the middle of the afternoon. Our site has been stable now for like a month. Here are some tips. Make sure services are set to min1 and max of number of processor cores plus 1. At peak load, check RAM and CPU, if RAM is over like 70% consider adding more, look at Committed memory under task manager, performance, memory and make sure the numbers are not too close together. ESRI states that the new architecture seems to be more memory intensive. Make sure that the computer is set to System Managed on the virtual memory. Also, we have seen improvements when we increased (doubled) the Max Heap of SOC through server manager/admin. Lastly, we also seen improvements in publishing performance by creating user admin accounts for server manager...in users / roles through ArcGIS server manager instead of using one master admin/publishing account and sharing among users.
