Learning   TG3 , and More

Since the online learning, I have learned a lot more that keeps my head in a book, or glancing a map and thinking of story mapping. I have even learned about and flown a drone. Not in Washington , DC, but in Prince William County where I may get to help teacher a sustainability project. And my dear friend, you know who you are ,the interlocking sections of ESRI online is a lot more complex than Facebook, but I am not complaining. Running to catch up.

A Chesapeake Bay Trip for Teachers

I have found one kindred soul who is a DC teacher, but this is the crush period of the year I am not in a school but a community learning place with some funding and the possibility of grant funding from the Mayor and OCTO.

We have private schools, we have public schools and we have charter schools. They compete, well sort of. So I am working in a community project which is the Southwest Greenleaf Gardens. It is not green and there are no gardens yet. We are having a Greenleaf Beautification Day Tomorrow. Booths and mulch and delivered plants and herbs. So the mapping or planning this time was of herb gardens, and plants that will grow well in our area.

 

Teacher Professional Development Chesapeake Bay Trip

 

 One group of us will be going to SERC tomorrow. That  is the Smithsonian Education Resource Center near Annapolis.

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) provides science-based knowledge to meet critical environmental challenges.  SERC leads objective research on coastal ecosystems—where land meets the sea—to inform real-world decisions for wise policies, best business practices, and a sustainable planet. 

 

I go there a lot. From the website...As the leading environmental research institute of the world’s largest museum complex, SERC’s headquarters comprise 2,650 acres of diverse landscape and 16 miles of protected shoreline on the nation’s largest estuary - Chesapeake Bay – just 25 miles from the nation’s capital.  The site serves as a natural laboratory for long-term and cutting edge ecological research.  Here we are exploring the most pressing issues affecting the environment, including toxic chemicals, water quality, invasive species, land use, fisheries, and global change.  SERC also explains environmental science in innovative ways that change how people view the biosphere and inspire them to take an active role in sustainable stewardship of the Earth.   SERC leads networks of research and education extending across both coasts of the U.S. and around the planet.

What are the goals?

Here is my set of photos of the lab when it is not an open house, but dedicated to student learning on field trips.

So I did not do the Climate March. I serve in a different way. I am taking kids a learning place.
