this is a very lucid explanation that I will use in my class! However, from a programmatic perspective it would still be nice to have the option of inputting a FC OR a layer for many of the functions that require only layers, but I can see where this can lead to duplication and even confusion. I can live with layers now that I know why they are used as input. Brian

adding the .gdb extension solved the issue.. But I still have a question about Feature Layers and feature classes. The buffer tool wants a feature layer as input. Does this preclude the use of a feature class? If so, we can create feature layers easy enough MakeFeatureLayer but why the complication? Thanks for the help!

Hi Britt! At the UC we discussed the difference between layer files and feature classes. Many of the arcpy function calls (like model builder tools!) will not work with feature classes. As a result when calling a command that requires a layer we are forced to first create one from an existing feature class. Am I interpreting this correctly or are there 'other' calls that will accept FC's? This came up today in a call to arcpy.Buffer_analysis(FC2_GDB,FC3,"100 yards") where FC2_GDB is a GDB feature class. I get an error input data set is not supported. Also If I do need to create a layer, are those layers temporary if not can I make them temporary or do I need to delete them later. Brian

Thanks everyone for the help. It turns out that INDEXING BOTH files is critical. Especially when the file sizes become very large. Thanks everyone. Sorry to take up your time. I should have been more careful reading the help! To be honest I'm not sure how indexing works so I had no idea it could have such a big impact.

Joshua, Kory Thanks for the replies. The join is 1:1. I exported a table from a point file and processed it in SPSS. This generated an output file that added a new field to the table. Initially I joined this new table, which was in CSV form, to the original point file. The join worked well but saving the join takes a very very long time as indicated previously. I also created a GDB table from the CSV and joined this to the point file. Again the join worked but again the save operation took as long as the previous attempt. Interestingly I tried both solutions in Desktop and Pro. Desktop process the save in about half the time-6 hours! I'm writing a script as suggested by Dan and will hope this addresses my problem. While the join itself works and seems to happen very quickly, saving the join is the real problem. Converting the csv file to a GDB table doesn't seem to provide any gains.

Join operation takes about 12 hours to complete in Pro. (900,000 records with about 10 variables). Desktop operation takes about 6 hrs. Is this normal? If so, how does this speak to BIG data as this is not really representative of BIG data. platform - recent I7, 16 GB, SSD.

This raised 3 questions, First how do I get access to the 9.x locators, next why wouldn't you use the 10.x locators. Would this work on your station IF you used the 10.x locator? Very strange problem. Brian

Interesting. I see you are using 9.x. I'm using 10.1. US street dual range. Not sure why this would cause a problem but I can't get mine to work. Thanks for trying.

I've attached a zip file that contains a small street file and a list of addresses. I can't get the geocoding to work. Not sure why. I'd appreciate some help. Brian
