I finally found Color Model Conversion under the Image Analysis window in ArcMap (10.2.2). Highlight your image name at top of window ->Processing->fx->Right click on Identity Function -> Insert->choose Color Model Conversion from list. However it would not run on my 4 band Tiff. I don't know if this is because it is 4 bands (no option is given to select which bands to use for the color model) or because of its format. No useful error message, it just says the inputs are inappropriate.

Hello, I have a raster with a colormap. In the table of contents in Arcmap, the legend shows up with the values from the raster, 1, 2, 3, etc. But I want it to show the actual names of the classes, which are in an attribute field in the raster. Is there any way to get it to do this?

Here's one way: In ArcCatalog - Contents tab - click on the name of the raster and it will drill down to the individual bands. Drag each band from ArcCatalog into the Composite Bands tool.

This would be a really useful tool. I've often felt the same need, but I do it in other software.

1. Is there a way to change the default setting so a new polygon layer that is added comes in as a colored outline (no fill) rather than a solid color? 2. In the color ramps for coloring polygons by attribute (i.e Categories->Unique Values), all the choices are for solid colors, none for outlines. Is there any way to generate a bunch of different colored outlines by unique value? A couple things I've been wondering about for a long time that would save me lots of effort. Fiona

FYI Converting polygons to points is much faster if you export to shapefile format rather than the geodatabase. Surprising timings for a dataset with 183923 features, using the Feature to Point tool in ArcGIS 10.1 with the INSIDE option: File geodatabase polygon to point fc: ~25 minutes Polygon shapefile to point shapefile : 27 minutes Fgdb polygon fc to point shapefile: 1 minute.

Just to clarify, I did create the geodb in 10.0. But after that I imported data while working in 10.1. Other datasets within the geodb are OK, only the raster with the colormap seems to be a problem. Thanks, F.

I have a raster in a geodb. It's just a raster in ArcGIS's native format, not a mosaic dataset. I am working in ArcGIS 10.1, but the client has Arc 10.0. We found that the raster is not recognized in 10.0. The only way to make it viewable in 10.0 is to delete the colormap. But the colormap is actually quite important. Is there a way to have a colormap in 10.0? I could not find any info on this backward incompatability problem in the ArcDoc.

In Symbology, change rendering from Colormap to Unique Values. You should see the same colours but only 14. If there are extra entries for nonexistent values, delete them. Then Export Colormap. Go back to the Colormap tab. Import the same Colormap that you just exported. You should now have the same colormap without the extra values.

FYI: ET Geowizards has a tool to calculate thickness and circularity of polygons (Polygon Characteristics) and its Eliminate tool allows you to eliminate on this basis. This is one of the licensed features.

I want to identify and remove long thin polygons that surround all or part of other polygons like halo's. A perimeter/area ratio captures a few of them but not all. Total perimeter in combination with perimeter/area captures a few more, but if I make the ratio's threshold any higher, I start getting valid polygons that I want to keep. Complications: - Some are long thin segments connected to an area that is not long and thin (would like to remove the long thin part but not the whole thing) - This needs to be an automatic process as operational requirements will not allow time to go and individually select polygons A way to identify the minimum distance between opposite borders of a polygon would help. Or on the raster side, minimum pixel depth. I can do this either as vector or raster. Has anyone dealt with a similar problem? Any ideas?

Dan, your suggestion #2 almost worked - i.e. after first running Simplify Polygon with a very low tolerance and NO_CHECK, and then running it again with desired parameters, the tool did get further in the process (was able to process more features) before hanging. But it still hung. The problem with No_check is that, even at the very low tolerance, it creates slivers that are actually gaps in the data - empty holes. I can't remove them with Eliminate because I can't select them. I'm not sure how to get rid of them at all. Yes, the data is projected (UTM, metres).

Hi Chris Seeing the Results in real time is how I can tell if it is hanging or not. If it is "Writing Feature xxxxxx" and #xxxxxx keeps changing, I know it is working. If it gets stuck and the feature # does not change, and the Messages don't change either (it does not proceed to a further stage) I know it is hanging. Thus the need to see the Results. F.

My polygon featureclass (in a file geodb) has 1531 polygons. It was originally created from a raster so the linework is blocky. I have already eliminated all tiny polygons, dissolved, repair geometry. I am trying to run Simplify Polygon as follows: CA.SimplifyPolygon (inStands, simpStands1, "POINT_REMOVE", 2, 2000, "RESOLVE_ERRORS") I have tried it with different parameters and it still hangs. If I choose "NO_CHECK" instead of "RESOLVE_ERRORS", it runs very fast, but just creates a huge mess - not only slivers, but some of the original linework is still there doubled up with the new linework - it's like it didn't really finish. "RESOLVE_ERRORS" does a beautiful job on a subarea, but hangs on the whole file. It hangs at the stage "Assembling Features". It has created some temporary line feature files but the output featureclass is still empty. It hangs forever and I have no choice but to crash it. I had the same problem with another similar file, but eventually I got it to run at the above settings. I can't go any higher with the point remove tolerance or the lines get too generalized. I really need to simplify these polygons. Splitting it up is a last resort as the edgematching after simplify and smooth will be ugly. Ideas?

This was a good answer. If I put print arcpy.GetMessages() in my script, it will print the messages from the latest tool that was run. However, of course it will not print these messages until after the tool has run. In my case, I prefer to see it while because I am having a problem with something hanging. To see the results WHILE the tool is being run I think I have to convert the script into a script tool so I can run it from ArcCatalog.
