We have a number of clients on Windows 10 who all in the last week or so are experiencing corrupted geodatabases. Only Windows 10 users. All using Arc 10.2 or higher.

<facepalms> My sincerest apologies. I've doing GIS for 14 years. Maybe not at the highest levels, but high enough and long enough to know that REBOOTING YOUR SYSTEM AFTER A MAJOR INSTALL is a good idea. Which I didn't do. Until now. And...um...things seem to working just fine. The script(s) that were generating the error I posted in the original post, are working just fine. My developer co-worker said that the system path variable wasn't going to reflect any changes until after a reboot, which was likely the cause for the failures. Then he laughed at me. Deservedly so. So...step away, folks, nothing to see here.

2.6 was installed when ArcMap 10.0 was installed. In the Python26 directory, there is no site-packages folder in the lib folder. Looks like the 2.6 directory is somewhat gutted. The Python27 directory does have the "desktop10.1.pth" file that you mentioned below. Prior to installing 10.1, I uninstalled the Data Interoperability for 10.0 and then 10.0 itself using Windows. Was that a bad idea? I considered uninstalling Python26, but...I don't see it in the Program list in Control Panel. Based on your screen shot - I see both Python2.6 and Python2.7 paths trying to be called. I'm not certain how this has happened. Did you manually install Python 2.6 (when you were using it with 10.0)? Could you uninstall it to see if that fixes it? If you go here: C:\Python26\ArcGIS10.2\Lib\site-packages // C:\Python27\ArcGIS10.1\Lib\site-packages ....do you see a "desktop10.0.pth" or "destop10.1.pth" in either directory? Since you only have DT 10.1 installed, you should only have desktop10.1.pth in the Python27\ArcGIS10.1\Lib\site-packages folder.

Windows 7 Pro SP2 32 bit ArcGIS Basic (ArcView) 10.1 So I finally moved away from 10.0 to 10.1. I seem to be having some problems with my Python scripts. None of them work, and I think it may be a Python version issue and Import arcpy isn't happening. Below is the error message I get every time I try running one of my tools: Anybody have any idea on where to even start on something like this?

The two feature classes in question are in the same feature dataset, so yes they are the same projection. And the data frame projection is the same as the feature dataset's, so I know it's not a projection issue.

For the purposes of discussion, building a Topology is not an option, otherwise this exercise would be easy. I am performing the same Select By Location two different ways. The first method, let's say Method A, is performed manually, using the Select By Location icon in ArcMap. I am selecting line features from LayerL that intersect point features from LayerP. A review of the selection seems to indicate that results are accurate and expected. The second method, let's say Method B, is performed via a Python script. Below is a code snippet lyrL = arcpy.GetParameterAsText(0)
lyrP = arcpy.GetParameterAsText(1)
arcpy.SelectLayerByLocation_management(lyrL, "INTERSECT", lyrP, "", "NEW_SELECTION") Method B does *NOT* return the same selection as Method A. The results of this selection are dubious, as many line features are not selected that do, in fact, intersect points, as well as many line features that are selected that do NOT intersect points. I am thinking this might be a tolerance issue, but I can't find anything to support my theory. Anybody have an idea why this is, or has anybody experienced this before?

Windows 7 Pro 32bit SP 1 ArcView 10.0 SP 5 Using just ArcView here, or Desktop Basic, or whatever it's called now. I want to write a function that detects if a feature class has any Subtypes in it, and if so, has a field been specified as the Subtype field. These are both just Yes/No answers. I would have thought for sure that describing the feature class would yield a Subtype property, but apparently it does not. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

...snip... In short, get the spatial reference string in any way and use the string instead of a name. Let me know whether that works. Oh that's what I already had done and figured out. See the seventh post of this thread.

See the screenshot below - when you select the parameter name you'll see a list of parameter properties below. Click next to Default and type the name of the coordinate system: That's what I tried doing, many times and many spelling variations. As soon as I clicked "Apply" or "OK", the default name I had entered would disappear. I guess I never hit on the correct spelling of the spatial reference name. See the third post in the thread.

I figured it out. You can set a default spatial reference for a spatial reference parameter two different ways on the parameters tab of the script properties window. At wits end, I tried copying in the system path to the prj I wanted as the default value on the parameters tab. When I hit enter it replaced the path value with the actual contents of the prj file. And when you run the script it displays the name of the coordinate system in the parameter value box. Either value works as well if you're hard coding a spatial reference in a script. I'm fairly certain none of this is covered in any documentation I could find. Good to know now, though! Thanks for help, guys!

Bump. Sorry for the lengthy delay in getting back to this. Can anybody else offer a way to set a default value for a paramter that is a spatial reference? To summarize, I am creating some feature classes and would like to provide a default value for the spatial reference parameter. The reason is that it is several clicks to get to the one you want, and as this script is project specific, the spatial reference isn't going to change, thus saving time entering parameters. If I provide the user the option to select something different then the script is a little more flexible and can be used in other projects. Should I do it through the Tool Validation Class? If so, how? Thoroughly confused here.

Windows XP Pro SP3 ArcView 10.0 SP2 I have a pretty simple task that would be well suited for the attribute table's Calculate Field functionality, but I don't even know where to start as far as doing this with Python. I've written dozens of Python standalone scripts, so I don't think it's a language issue. I just don't know how to do this in the Calculate Field window. I have five fields involved in this calculate. Fields A1, A2, B1 and B2 are Long Integer fields. This is the logic: if (A1 == B1 and A2 == B2): return "A AND B IDENTICAL" else: return "OK" I would like the returned value to appear in field C. Now how in the heck would this be done in the Calculate Field window? ALSO...is there a trove of Python code block examples somewhere?

Hi Glenn, it is a little unclear about what you need to do here. Are you trying to get a spatial reference that is not hard-coded in a script? If so, you can get the spatial reference from your input data in the script and then carry it over to the other data you create. This would look like: sr = arcpy.Describe(infc).spatialReference # with infc being your input data Kat Kat, My apologies. I will be more verbose. I have a standalone script that I launch/run from a custom toolbox in my project folder. I run it by double-clicking on the script icon in the catalog window from within ArcMap. When my script runs, a window pops up that prompts the user enter or select some inputs/parameters. One of the choices the user must make is to select a Spatial Reference. I would like the script window to open up with a Spatial Reference already entered for that parameter. The user can either go with that entry, or they can select a different one. I am trying to figure out how to make my script window open up with a Spatial Reference already selected for the appropriate parameter. I have attached a screenshot of my script window so that you can see how many of the parameters are already set. I have tried specifying a default Spatial reference parameter in the same way as I did for my other parameters (by going to the script properties window), but each time I copy in the name of the spatial reference for the parameter's default property, it disappears when I click "Apply" or "Ok". Screenshot of script window:

ArcView 10.0 SP1 Windows XP Pro SP3 I have a standalone script in which one of the parameters is a Spatial Reference. I have figured out how to set default values for other data types in the script properties window, but I can't figure out how to do it for a Spatial Reference. Do I have to do it within the script? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
