I'm sorry to rain on your parade but ESRI's attitudes towards the importance of map legends really leaves something to be desired. For instance, in using ArcView 9.3.1 I have found that I have to go to a 3rd party extension in order to control the contents of the legend and limit the legend to those items that actually appear in the layout. This extension has been around for 10 years and still has not be incorporated as core functionality. Now I find that the ArcGIS Explorer Desktop doesn't even print a legend. This was a tool for which I had high hopes. I was going to use it as a support tool for my front desk staff. Now, I'm not sure this is a good idea. If a customer can't even get a printout of a map with a legend then the tool is not optimal. Remember the basics and always, always, do them well. --Joe

I have users for whom I would like to make ArcGIS Explorer Desktop available. One of the most fundamental and useful features for these users is the 'Identify' button. Is this functionality available in ArcGIS Explorer Desktop? My users need to be able to click on a feature and have the attributes for that feature pop-up.

I have loaded 13 layer packages and everything appeared to be working fine. I added the 14th layer package and now the map view area 'whites out' and won't display anything including the base map. Any ideas as to what is doing this? It is acting like this now, even after I have unloaded the 14th layer. Help!!

Ok, I got it. Many many thanks! It works like a charm now. Thanks Bryan. I am running v.9.3.1 I will check on the HTML popups. Do you know offhand where I'm likely to find this setting option?

I have shapefiles and layer packages loaded into my ArcGIS Explorer desktop. With the shapefiles I can double click a location on the map and a blue popup window appears that gives me the record in the shapefile attribute table that corresponds to that location. Extremely convenient and one of the key bits of functionality that I require. BIG PROBLEM: However, when I attempt to double click on the map on a layer package that I have loaded, nothing at all happens. If I load the shapefile instead of the layer package I can successfully double click and get attributes. BUT I cannot display a multiple class legend for that shapefile (hence the necessity of doing a layer package). Am I doing something wrong or have I just touched upon a limitation of the software as it is currently designed?

I have a layer with three possible values for a particular field in the attribute table (it's a shapefile). Is there anyway to get ArcGIS Explorer Desktop to display 3 different colors based upon the value in this field? OR am I stuck with one color for everything?
