Annina, I do fully understand the limitations of a shapefile However I think when downloading a dataset from OpenData, I should be able to use the original datasets "alias" as the downloaded datasets (e.g. shpfile) field name. Sincerely, Mike Semenek

Annina, I appreciate your reply. What I hope we can do is utilize the alias for the field name conversion to the shape file. The shape file its self does not need the alias built in. I'm looking to have the existing field name be replaced with the alias as the new field name in the shape file output. I hope I made my self a little clearer on this issue / idea. And I hope this is still considered and not rejected Unfortunately a fieldname reduction is not an option for us. Thank you, Mike Semenek

Well my ideas title pretty much sums up my problem (and much needed ArcGIS online "Open Data" enhancement). Any Open Data feature layer field attributes that have an "Alias" setup on them, are not honored when you download the data to a shapefile. The "Alias" is gone. We really need the "Alias" capability to be honored in any downloads for two reasons: First - We need the capability to be able to help with the shapefile field truncation issue. A long field name is fine in SQL or in a file geodatabase, but not a shapefile. Example: REA017_PROP_CLASS truncated becomes REA017_PRO. If you read the truncated field name in the downloaded shapefile, you will have no idea what “REA017_PRO” stands for, or what it represents. Which leads to the second reason. Second reason – We simplified several field names with an alias to “keep it simple” or easy to understand. Example: In our ParcelsRealEstate feature layer I have a field called “REA017_PROP_CLASS” which stands for real estate 2017 parcels property class. I set an alias of "PropClass" on the field to make it even easier for people to understand. But this PropClass alias (Which simply stands for Property Class) is not honored, I end up with a downloaded shapefile field called REA017_PRO… I can guarantee you more and more agencies will need this "Alias" capability, when they setup and/or provide free geospatial data using “Open Data” on arcgis.com. Update to my original post above. What I hope we can do is utilize the alias for the field name conversion to the shape file. The shape file its self does not need the alias built in. I'm looking to have the existing field name be replaced with the alias as the new field name in the shape file output. #everyonethinkstheirideaisthemostimportantandMineIs

Baffour, I have well over 80 services setup that point to are SQL databases for data. Some secured, some open to the public. Additional questions I would be asking you are: Do you have an ArcGIS Server? Do you have an ArcGIS Server with rest services open to the public? Did you setup token security on your ArcGIS Server? Is the rest service secured? If "Yes". Did you add the rest services into AGOL from your ArcGIS Server? If "Yes". Did you save the user account and password to open the layer up in an AGOL web map. (So users do not need to log into ArcGIS Online and then log into the ArcGIS Server rest services to open up the secured data.) If you added the data directly in from your rest services (and the service is secured on your ArcGIS Server) you will always be prompted with a login screen. I do recommend you contact ESRI support. Why?? Because this discussion can lead into several other issues you might be having. Mike

Baffour, A lot has changed since I first created this discussion. I have not had any issues sharing ArcGIS Online web maps or apps in recent years. Make sure the ArcGIS online "web map" is shared with Everyone (public). Make sure all the layers added into the web map are shared with Everyone (Public). If any layers added into the web map are "not" shared with the public, this could possibly be your issue. When you save the ArcGIS online web map, you may be prompted with an "Update Sharing" popup screen for layers that are not shared the same way. Just click on the "Update Sharing" button. If you click on the "Cancel" button the layers in the web map may not be visible. A simple test: Log in and open the web map. Click on the "Share" button.... When the Share pop-up window appears: First make sure the Everyone (public) check box is checked ON. If "Yes". Then copy and paste the "Link to this map" URL into a new browser window and open it. (Note: Clear your browser cache if you are logged in to ArcGIS Online. Otherwise the web map will open and you will probably be logged into AGOL). The web map should open and you should see a "Modify Map / Sign In" in the upper right hand corner of the web map. If this fails you may want to consider contacting ESRI Tech support. Hope this helps you out. Mike Semenek

Hi Chris, I appreciate the tip on how to load the tiling scheme from the world topo map. That works. But I think the levels should be made available in the ArcGIS online / Google / Bing tiling scheme “default” selection as well. My cache process succeeded – Results show a run time of 29 hours 59 minutes and 17 seconds. Granted I only cached next scale below 1128 (or 564). If I run all the levels from the world topo map service down to 1:71…. I’m concerned the process will take a month or two to complete. I think I need another server just to run cache processes!!! I wish you could display an existing cache level (Say 564) to the base cache level of 1:71 (Even if the cache appeared to be a little pixelated in your web map) at least it would display and not disappear. Thanks again for the tip on how to load the tiling scheme, Mike

Several issues: When you first create a cached map service using the “ArcGIS Online / Bing Maps / Google Maps” tiling scheme. There is not an option to set the scale below 1128.497176. We are using version 10.3 - No patch available so far on ESRI’s web site. Any local cached services using this tiling scheme will not display in a web map below a max level of 1128. In ArcGIS Server - Altering the tiling scheme “Maximum Scale” on an existing cached service has no effect on displaying the cached service at a lower scale (Example: I set the max scale to 1:71). The cached service will not display and still disappears from the AGOL web map when you zoom in below a scale of 1128. My only option was to add a new cache scale of 564.248588 using the “ArcToolbox” tool called “Manage Map Server Cache Scales”. Then use the “Manage Maps Server Cache Tiles” tool and recreate empty tiles for the new cache scale of 564.248588. I ran a test: I created a cached service using our high school district boundaries with the new cache scale of 564.248588. It works... I can view the cache below a scale of 1128 to the new scale of 564. However it still disappears if you zoom in even closer to a scale of 1:71. Scales levels taken from World_Imagery (MapServer) Level ID's. Another Issue: I created a new cache level of 564 for our counties contour data. It has been running for almost 20 hours. I just viewed the tile cache status and its 79.8% done – Tile generation is still in progress. If I have to update all our cached services, this is going to take a long time to finish and take up a lot of additional storage space. And I still cannot view the cache below 564. This data must be cached.. To much data to be displayed as just a map service (Non-cached). Unfortunately using the “Set visibility range” option in an AGOL web map has no effect on displaying an existing cached service at a lower scale. It resets back to the Max scale of 1128. Has anyone figured out a workaround? Thanks.

ArcGIS Server 10.3.0 (build 4322) / ArcMap 10.3 Cached map service not displaying properly in ArcGIS online web map: (Problem and Solution). Problem: I created an ArcGIS Server cached map service and used the Tiling Scheme “Suggest” option. Set my scale levels equal to 12 or Min. cache scale of 1:500,000 to Max. cache scale of 1:250. The map cache creation process in ArcGIS Server completed without any errors. The cached map service opens and displays properly in ArcMAP (Ver. 10.3). No issues / displays fast!! But the cached map service will NOT display in an ArcGIS online web map…. I connected to our rest services and selected “View In: ArcGIS.com Map”. The cached map service opens in a web map, however it’s displayed as a Basemap (Not as a Content layer). Not sure why?? In an AGO web map, when you “Add / Add Layer from Web” and specify the URL to our rest service it adds the cached map service as a layer but never displays it on the map. You can see the cached map service in the Legend and Content but not on the map. Solution: When you create a cached map service. In the caching options “Cache Settings” we had to use the "ArcGIS Online / Bing Maps / Google Maps" tiling scheme. This worked... The cached map service displays properly in an AGO web map. Hopefully in the near future AGO will support displaying other tiling schemes in a web map. I thought I would post this solution just in case anyone else experienced the same problem.

I am experiencing the same problem. I am in the process of setting up a brand new workstation - which fails to open our existing flex application. Using FireBug I noticed I get a 404 Not Found error on an .SWZ. My existing workstation opens up the application just fine - No issues / No "Error #2032" message.

How are you pulling the service into an ArcGIS Online web map? Are you pulling in individual layers from the map service (or) are you pulling in the entire map service into your web map? I have noticed a similar issue if I use the ??Add \ Add Layer from Web? - Select ??An ArcGIS Web Service? Then specify the URL which points to a rest service MapServer/# or ID Number. When the MapServer/# or individual layer is added into an ArcGIS online web map the symbols do not show up properly. If I use the ??Add \ Search for Layers? and select - In: ??A GIS Server? and type in the URL for our rest services?. Then select a service - The layers and\or line symbols show up properly. Granted I am pulling in the entire service instead of one individual layer from the service. Two options: 1. Change the symbols after you pull in the individual MapServer/#s. In the ArcGIS online web map click on button ??Show contents of Map?. Click on the gray arrow to the right of the map service layer you added - Scroll down and click on ??Change Symbols?. Then change the colors, line thicknesses etc. 2. Try adding in the service using the search for layers in a GIS server, type in http://<your-server>/arcgis/rest/service then select\add in the service. See if your service layer symbols show up properly. Hopefully the ESRI ArcGIS Online programming staff will look into this symbol issue. Not sure if this is bug. Hope this helps you out.......

To Mike M., In my previous post: The first URL listed was deleted\removed. That's why the URL will not open....... What I found: I received a blank screen or redirect to login using the "Simple Map Viewer" template on my droid smart phone. The Two Pane and Basic Viewer templates opened up just fine. I ended up using the "Basic Viewer" template for our NAVD88 Benchmarks application.... Even though my issue was not resolved, opening up the "Web Mapping Application" on a smart phone is NOT the way to go. Difficult to zoom in and select features, everything's to small on screen. You should only open up the "Web Map" on a smart phone. Thanks for your help. To Bob: Mike M. from ESRI is correct. You would need to contact the person who created the map. It looks like it's not shared to Everyone (Public) anymore. The "Web Map" and "Web Mapping Application" must be shared to Everyone (Public). Thanks, Mike S.

Additional Information: Both the Web Map and Web Mapping Application have been shared as public. I can access the application from my workstation. (No log in required, both open up just fine). But I cannot access the web mapping application from my phone. It redirects me to the log in page. We have token security setup on our ArcGIS server but the service utilized is shared with everyone.

I created several public "Web Maps" and "Web Mapping Applications" in the past. No problems - they work great on my Verizon HTC smart phone. But now every time I try to make a web map public and\or web mapping application public. Its not public. The Access and Use Constraints URL redirects to the arcgis online login page on my phone? What am I missing? Is anyone else running into this issue? Shared with Everyone (public) is checked "ON"..... My workstation opens up the application just fine... My phone redirects to the log in page. I used the "Make Web Application" with the new "Simple Map Viewer" template.
