Lots of good thoughts on this thread; thank you for thinking through this design. @KoryKramer - the "Make administrative settings" method falls short for us as well, for many of the same reasons @Anonymous User outlines (not the least of which is added admin overhead). In addition, add-ins loaded via HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE are "Shared Add-Ins" and can be protected, but these apply across the machine - and different users sometimes prefer different combinations of add-ins. Registry folders can be specified in HKEY_LOCAL_USER, but as the documentation states, "This is equivalent to adding additional folders via the Add-In Manager Options in ArcGIS Pro." Also- love JeffK's line of thinking about the lifespan of development vs production add-ins.

Hi - I'm looking for information on other utilities' procedures/policies for handing requests for data. I'm particularly interested in policies that try to strike a balance between data sharing and system security. I'm also interested in whether utilities have different or "tiered" policies depending on the request: (a) the type of assets, (b) geographic precision, (c) geographic extent/scope, (d) non-spatial attributes requested, as well as any redistribution agreement(s) you may require. If your utility has policy/procedure/thinking along these lines that you can share, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I've reviewed this thread and am looking at the current advice to run mitigation scripts to remove JndiLookup.class files. I have not seen any discussion of potential adverse effects. Is there a downside of removing the JndiLookup.class files? Will we lose functionality (if so, what)? Or are they simply unused in ArcGIS products?

Thanks so much for this info. I have been troubleshooting performance issues with TruncateTable, Append, AddField, and AddXY taking longer than seemed appropriate for the number of rows being processed. In one particular script, each was taking ~90 sec. With arcpy.SetLogHistory(False) in place, each statement takes <= 0.5 sec.

Stuart McKay, we are an Oracle shop. I uninstalled the 2.2.2 patch on multiple machines and saw no ill effect.

Just in case anyone else happens upon this thread: we typically have versioned feature classes with Editor Tracking enabled. We have recently started to implement archiving. Our editor tracking timestamps are in UTC and our archive table (_H) timestamps are in local time. However, it appears that for nonversioned data, the archive timestamps are in UTC rather than local time. (Editor tracking timestamps are still in UTC as well.) This is on 10.4.1 with an Oracle back end; YMMV.

The solution in our environment has been to force DNS lookups to the old server to return 0.0.0.0. In C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS on the client machine: 0.0.0.0 old_server_dns_name The issue appears to have been that in our environment, the old server remained online but did not have the expected SDE data sources available - or the server was entirely offline but still listed in DNS. I had tried suggestions such the one posted by Asrujit SenGupta above (forcing the old server to 127.0.0.1) and variations on the thoughts posted by Michael Volz (trying to force the connections to the new server) but they did not hold in all cases. 2/28/2018: ETA that this change should be made on the client machine.

We are attempting to retire an Oracle/SDE instance. Our existing MXDs have had most of their data sources pointed to a new server and database with a new Oracle service name. However, some MXDs still have data sources pointing to the old server. When the old database instance is shut down, ArcMap loads much more slowly on a client machine (a document previously opening in 1 min +/- now takes 15 minutes or more to open). I have tried commenting out the old server's entry in the client TNSNAMES.ORA file, to no avail. Has anyone seen similar behavior? Is there any way to get ArcMap to give up in a reasonable amount of time and just display a broken layer symbol?

Would this kind of construct be useful? my_layers = [ \

['DA','K:\GradWork\GIS\CollegePark\CPDrainage.shp'],\
['soil','C:\Users\Rachael\VB_Soils.shp']\

print 'debug 1 key: ' + layer[0] + ' value: ' + layer[1]

I'm sure this is do-able but it's a little difficult to make a recommendation without seeing your whole code. In particular, it would be useful to see the original definitions for your three variables and a little more information about how you intend to use them later in the script. (One approach may be to have "before" and "after" variables, or something like that.) I would be careful about trying to re-assign l while inside that loop (and in any case, just working off the top of my head, I'm not sure Project_management returns a value you can or would want to use that way anyway, though I'd be grateful to stand corrected on that).
