Fully agree - sometimes the definitions I would like to have as hints are lengthy, so obviously I don't want them to show automatically, but I need a pop-up box big enough to accommodate them! And either the media::image should be collapsible or guidance hints should be able to be images. Also kind of annoying that you have to have hint text and not just the little lightbulb icon.

Agree, repeats are the most logical way to collect species survey data because you never know how many species you may need to enter. But if you discover you need to go back to edit a repeat entry, it's a slow tedious process to hit the arrow until you find the right record. At the very least you should be able to click the "1 of ##" bar at the bottom and select by number, but even better would be to designate a field to label each repeat record and be able to select it that way. Alternatively you could stack each repeat record vertically on the screen and be able to scroll through them instead of tabbing horizontally.

Agree! When entering areal coverages for dozens of plant species, it's not uncommon to get through them all and then discover a typo on one of the species. Then you have to click back through the entries dozens of times. It should be easy to just figure out I need to fix record #14 and go straight there instead of clicking an arrow 14 times.

Oh I see how to do nested repeats now, thanks for pointing that out. The calculations I need to do involve nested conditional statements (I only want it to pull certain values if certain previous conditions are met). I could potentially work around that by creating a lot of calculated fields with conditions, but I much prefer to write one clean equation in an XLS form. I do agree, though, that adding calculated fields to the Survey123 web designer would help those who prefer using a GUI. And the ability to export survey responses to a custom-designed PDF is incredibly useful (although GC cannot display nested repeats in the PDF yet). Unfortunately neither platform allows me to customize the appearance of the survey on a mobile device in a way that's conducive to the data I need to collect, but I'm hoping as each platform strives to improve, that will come eventually.

If you want to make a simple survey and use a GUI online to do so, GoCanvas does seem to have a little more customizability. However, if you need any complex features (like nested repeats or complex calculations) Survey123 Connect seems to be the way to go (although I'm still waiting on a few features). I tried out GC and the one thing I do really like is the idea of customizable PDF output. I think I saw that Survey123 has something like this in their product plan, is this correct? I'll comment on John's post about that feature.

I have a Select_One field in a Repeat group and I would like to be able to prevent users from selecting the same answer twice in different instances of the Repeat. Specifically, it is a plant species list, and once a user has entered details (area covered) for a particular plant species, accidentally entering it twice would mess up the calculated results (total plant coverage). There may be multiple ways to achieve this, but I would imagine the easiest might be an expression in the Constraint column that either requires a Unique response or excludes a Duplicate response in that particular field. Another option might be to create a type of Select list that removes answers as they are selected, but the Constraint option would likely be more versatile, as it could by applied to Text and other types fields as well.

Can you think of a way to do this in a repeat field? I don't know how to refer back to previous instances of a repeat. I'd like to use a repeat to create a plant species list, and I want to make sure users don't enter the same species twice. Is there a way to set a constraint or warning message to check all previous instances of the repeat? Just to clarify, I can't just use a select_multiple for the plant list because there are additional details for each plant species being collected. A repeat would work best because I don't want to limit the number of plant species that can be recorded.

Repeat groups offer a good way to collect soil profile data, as profiles often have differing numbers of horizons and each horizon requires roughly the same details to be recorded about it. However, the Survey123 app only shows one repeat record (e.g., one horizon) at a time, requiring users to toggle left and right between them. When evaluating a soil profile to determine if it is hydric, it's important to be able to view all the horizons at once, so the app is not conducive to this. The Web Form displays each record stacked on one another, which would make the evaluation easier, but people collecting soil data in the field often do not have internet/4G access. Therefore, it would be nice if an Appearance option could be added for Repeats in the Survey123 app to appear with each record stacked on one another so the user can view multiple records at once and simply scroll up and down between them. I realize some people may like toggling between single records to reduce screen clutter, so the default Appearance could remain that way, but adding a "stacked" option for Appearance would allow for more layout flexibility, which is one of the main things Survey123 currently lacks in my opinion. I think the grid-theme that's in development would mesh well with this option to reduce screen clutter.

I would really like to see the grid-style supported by Survey123, and/or more ability to customize field size and arrangement in general. Having every field stacked just isn't an effective way to organize the type of data I need to collect.
