If you have no intention of doing spatial queries outside of ArcGIS, then the only reason to use native types would be performance, which is pretty easy to evaluate in a prototype during development. - V Hi Vince, Based on this statement, is it fair to say that the native SQL Server geometry type should be faster than SDEBINARY? That was the answer I got from ESRI Tech Support and it makes sense to me since there is no join required to the F_ table. However, we are testing migrating over our dense vector layers from SDEBINARY to GEOMETRY and my performance testing has yielded mixed results. In one case, using SDEBINARY is clearly faster than GEOMETRY. (I've looked at the showplan output and confirmed that the spatial index is getting used in the case of the GEOMETRY feature class so I don't think we're hitting the bug mentioned in this thread.) Now I'm wondering if our understanding that the native SQL Server geometry type is going to yield better performance isn't necessarily true. Any thoughts? Thanks, Shira

Thanks Vince. I guess I was under the mistaken assumption that the Upgrade Geodatabase function is for simply upgrading to the new version 10 schema. This now makes sense. Do you know if there is any danger in updating the database in this way before the SDE binary on the server has been upgraded? (FYI I been working with Tech Support on this issue for the past week and wish they could have told me what you told me in your simple response. Would have saved a lot of time.)

We upgraded all of our geodatabases to the version 10 schema a few months ago (from 9.3.1 SP2). This condensed the SDE system tables down to six as explained in this post http://blogs.esri.com/dev/blogs/geodatabase/archive/2010/03/15/the-simplified-geodatabase-schema-in-arcgis-10.aspx. Great. So, I just recently applied ArcGIS Desktop SP3 and now notice in ArcCatalog that the geodatabases are available again to be upgraded -- that is, in the properties page of each geodatabase, the Upgrade Geodatabase button is no longer grayed out. Why? I don't believe there were any schema changes released in SP3, so why is it possible to upgrade again? I clicked on the button and to my surprise, it successfully upgraded according to the results. But what exactly did it do? Why did it do it? Has anyone else seen this? Very perplexing to say the least. Version info: database = SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 sde = ArcSDE for MS SQL Server 64 bit 10 SP1 (direct connect) desktop = ArcGIS Desktop 10 SP3

I've created a very simple ArcGIS Server dynamic map service for a single polygon feature in an MXD. Labels are turned on for the layer with the setting "remove duplicate labels" (Placement Tab of the Placement Properties of Labels Tab). When I view the service in my OpenLayers demo app, the labels are duplicating. See attachment. Any idea how to prevent this label duplication? I only want one label per feature. Relevant code snippet: RBlabels= new OpenLayers.Layer.ArcGIS93Rest("RWQCBs with labels", "http://eis.sfei.org/arcgis/rest/services/BasicLayers1/MapServer/export", {layers: "show:0", format: "PNG24", srs:"EPSG:102113", transparent: "true"}, {isBaseLayer: false});
