I'm looking for an answer that I can't seem to find online. I'm looking to cut out a piece of one feature class using the extent of another feature class as a cookie cutter – I'm looking to cut the extent of of 3 different layer (polygon and polyline) to match the extent of another layer (a raster mosaic). The problem I've found is (I beilive) is that I to use the extent of a polygon (raster mosaiec layer), and I cannot cut the parameters onto a polyline. "When the Input Features are polygons, the Clip Features must also be polygons. When the Input Features are lines, the Clip Features can be lines or polygons. When clipping line features with line features, only the coincident lines or line segments are written to the output, as shown in the graphic below." Any advice on a solution?

I've been able to create a regional map using DEM tile data and the the mosaic function. Colored it, and added hill shade. Tomorrow I'll look to building in the road and water data. I hope to frame everything as well. Next week I'll head out to the trails and gather the correct GPS data. Should get me close to finishing this project. Recently I found out that the GPS data which we have, although accurate, can't be used because it is not quite up to date with what actually in the woods. It doesn't reflect the current trail structure. Recently, the DEC bought the parcel of land and restructured the trails. Some of our trails were, how you say, slightly outside the parcel box. Our recorded data reflects the pre-restructuring. Perhaps TMI but, a story shared. Learning how to use ArcMap 10.1 functionally seems to be a one-project/problem-at-a-time sort of process. I'm excited to keep up the learning. p.s. - any advice on the map is very welcome!

Hello everyone, I hope that you all may help me with a question I have regarding symbology layer overlay. I have 36 tiles of DEM data that together make a regional frame of raster data that I'm working with to build a trail map. I want the final map to show a sense of elevation change by color ramp style and hillshade (also contour lines, but that's not in question right now). I've established the color ramp style and hillshade value for one tile that I'd like to impose onto all other tiles. Is there a tool or method to overlay the symbology layer saved from the primary tile onto all tiles, at once, rather than importing the symbology layer onto each tile, one at a time. Below is an image of what I'm working with.

This is a really intense way to think about map making. baby steps, baby steps I tell myself. Scripting is a skills that I would like to get into, sooner than later. It seems to have limitless possibilities in the analysis, management, and utilization of data. Currently I'm working on building a map of a local trail system nearby my home. Once after I hope to develop a larger regional map through the same techniques I'm learning at the local level. Then, I plan to tap into Esri's Mapbook functions using the Arc platform + Python to write my own script useful to build my own book. But already, I'm well over my head. Again, baby steps.. baby steps

Great this is great news, thanks for the detail. I will look into these for my map. I'm thinking that I'll try shooting for DEM data, but I'm thinking that my computer will have a hard time processing the data - and that historic USGS Topo Maps may be the better option given disc space. What does it mean to "clip" a historic USGS topo map? Do you mean to assign long/lat coordinate systems to the corners while over a baselayer?

Thank you for the hep breaking down the map Forest, and for the quick vocab lesson on GIS. I'm learning a lot here on this forum. DEM seems to come standard in black and white, but building in a color ramp seems intuitively easy if there is associated elevation change data. Is it the case that DEMs generally come with associated elevation change data useful to change the color ramp from black/white to green/white? I'll check the NYS Clearinghouse website for DEM data (I don't think triangulated irregular network data is what I'm looking for), if I can't find it there I will check the US Geological Survay website for data. I will have to ask others about whether contour lines can be built in using a ArcMap function, or does one have to acquire a datalayer for contour data.

Marcus - thank you! Have you noticed any of my other posts? This site is really great - it's almost what exactly what I'm looking for. The ability to set the orthoimagery parameters the subsequently download the corresponding data is really easy and fast! I don't know if other mapping tools have this option,I have never noticed it before, but it's a great feature.Thank you! I downloaded so of the topo data to play around with. It came in geopdf filestype, (only available option for topo data). I'll next have to figure out how to convert geopdf into a form that's legible to ArcMap 10.1.

Chris, thank you! "leaf off" what a great term! There are really great suggestions in this thread. After reviewing the sites and their associated data, I feel like I have more questions and answers! A quick analysis makes it clear that there many formats and styles to consider while building maps. Oh but how exciting!? It's really starting to become clear to me that data acquisition plays a major role in a GIS project, and that becoming familiar with the sources can play a crucial role in time management.

So, I'm looking to build maps for personal use using ArcMap 10.1. These would be used as trail maps to navigate local trail systems. I want to base my map's style off another I've found online. I'm looking for help breaking down that found map. It's posted below. Note - I'm searching for help deducing the layers, and their type, not the title, legend, pictures, compass, and description What what I see in terms of layers includes: 1. Raster - topographic. Is there style name for this sort of topographic map (contour lines and elevation divided by color). 2. GPS Data of trails 3. Civil Boundries 4. Hydrology I think the most impressive part of this map is the raster data. Any suggestions on where I could find such data for upstate New York with high enough resolution to have the maps printed. Thanks to the guys at Colorado State Park Trail Program for building this great map!

Wow that's great to know the NAIP offers 1 meter resolution imagery for free. Unfortunately though, we're located in Upstate New York, so they might not have imagery for out area. I'll check out their data to see if they have what we're looking for. Also, I'll add this to my list of sites to use for sourcing raster data. Thank you! Great help!

Hey Mitch Holley, yes given that our budget is zero dollars absolute, we must use free data. We plan to print the maps on regular paper for personal on the trail. As I'm pretty new to the ArcGIS platform (but learning!), I'm uncertain of the resolution we need (I would guess we want high res). Perhaps you could offer a brief overview of what, "it's not high resolution (~15M)"? What does the 15M mean?

I'm looking to understand how experts may begin thinking about raster data acquisition for trail maps. Basically, where do you get your orthophotos for local use. I'd like to build trail maps that include all the elements of a good trail map - routes, legend, compass, elevation change, and scale. I prefer to build them on ArcGIS 10.3 instead of ArcGIS online for practical purposes. I understand the data we need to be raster data, boundary lines, and gps data. Esri can help build the rest. I plan to use gps data that local trail users have created, ArcGIS 10.3 functions, and topographic raster data. One thing I have learned is data can have a high monetary and disc space cost. That being said there are often free data sources, such as clearing houses, government sites, and third party sites. How do you navigate the network of sources? Or how does one, when tackling a project that requires raster data acquisition, start to think about getting their hand on useful raster data for ArcGIS use?

So, getting my hands wet with ARCgis platform, an endeavor to boost my graduate application, I feel that I'm capable to build basic maps. hooray! At my current state, I realize that data acquisition is a struggle. So, Im wondering if there are effective methods experts find useful to acquire raster data, used to build maps on ArcGIS Desktop. i.e topographic, orthophotos, so on... Especially interested in data that can be scaled down to 1:10000 (walking scale) Thank you!
