The trace tool in ArcGIS 10.2.1.3497 does not work all the time, or is very finicky about it when it does. I have been trying the whole day to encompass an area that is about 100 sq meters using the trace function from parcel lines so that I can create an easement. However, no matter what I do, the trace tool never even shows that its tracing. The few remote random times I do get it to start tracing, I have to pan around and this causes it to "break". I have shutdown and restarted numerous times, and am completely frustrated at this point. I even tried to use the old method (which worked all the time ESRI *cough, cough) of selecting what I'd like to trace and it still will not pick that it is supposed to be tracing that. I've come to the point where I am drawing multiple polygons and merging them together, but still have not managed to finish off this area. I have checked for geometry issues and have checked to make sure that all nodes are snapped together. I have also tried drawing a polygon in another layer in the hopes that I could just get that to work and then copy/paste/merge them. No go on that either. Please fix your tools so they work the way they are supposed to. ~a frustrated GIS Senior Analyst

I think you are missing something, as any time I have used the method you described, I am able to edit the text box and change what the title says. I assume you are using the method INSERT --> TITLE. This should pop up with a box to allow you to type in what your title is, or if you have entered one in the map document properties, automatically populate that initially. After that, its a simple double click (or right click, properties) to bring up the properties window. Then under the text tab, and the space below where it says text, you just enter in whatever title you want. I use data driven pages sometimes, so there might be some coding in that area, that I just clear it out as I generally don't want it. You might also want to change in document properties though, just to be safe. To change the appearance of the title, you have to click on CHANGE SYMBOL. Don't know why they just don't enable you to do it from this menu, but oh well, it is what it is. You could also just use a regular text box and do the same thing as well. Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing my sentiment. I looked at the arcscripts link you gave, and it seems like it is on the right track there as well. So that might be something in the future. I also realize that you could just do a text insert, and make it a light grey color. this would enable you to place it anywhere that you like and have multiple if needed. The one problem I have with this is then the ordering is not always going to be what you like, and there is no way to control the transparency of this feature. I also found that there is actually a setting in our printers that has the ability to add watermark. Once again, there is an issue with how transparent this is when printed out. While this will work, it would be nice to have the ability to add a watermark within arcmap, that would let you insert text or an image, and also allow for color and transparency settings to take affect. Thanks again for your help

Can someone please tell me why there is no insert watermark feature within ArcMap (currently using ArcGIS 10)? This seems like something that should be included when doing cartographic layouts. A nice simple watermark to say that it is a Draft, or to make sure it is inserted each time into data driven pages automatically, or when creating a mapbook for clients, it would be nice to have. And yes, I realize that I could probably figure out a way to do this with about 20 extra steps, but it seems to me that this should just be a simple feature that is easy to insert as say, an image. But I want it to be able to stretch and change with the layouts in data driven pages as the extents change. Thanks to anyone that can help me. If it is not missing, this is something that should be included in upcoming updates/versions of ArcMap

I've created a map that has html coding in an attribute field. While it works properly and shows the link as would be expected in the regular view of arcGIS online through the pop up, when switching to the arcGIS explorer online, the pop up shows the whole html string code and won't enable the hyperlink to work. What gives? I was trying to cut down from having the nasty long looking url strings that were popping up that had been able to work in arcGIS explorer online. if confused here is what I mean #<a hreff="www.linkhere.ocm">Text here</a> to get this: Text here - this works for arcGIS online as I get: Text here same thing above just shows the whole code in arcGIS explorer online Any ideas as to why, because explorer online does support web linking through the attribute field, it just isn't pretty
