Hi, My end goal is to have a database connection where I can use my fire data (incident types, lat and long) inside ArcDesktop. I currently export a .csv file and use "Make XY Event layer" in order to use the data. I have made a connection to my database inside ArcDesktop, but the my lat and long are stored as (char(20)) and don't work with the tool. I have tired to CAST the values in a SQL query, but hit a roadblock with errors. Any suggestions on how I could accomplish my end goal of using my fire data directly in ArcDesktop without exporting from my SQL database first? Thanks!

The street network is maintained by our County GIS department and is not specific for emergency response. I will double check with them on the restrictions and make the determination from that. Thank you for the response and image. It was very helpful. Brent

When creating a network drive time, do you typically un-check the "Turn Restrictions" in the Analysis Settings? This would seem to me to me a bit more realistic with creating a service area for emergency response. Thanks, Brent

Yes is a fantastic response. I recall reading the intensive data verus extensive data in an article this week. Understanding Statistical Data for Mapping Purposes I will have to go back and compare what you are describing as it pertains to fire departement response data. Thank you for the comments. Brent

Hi Robin, I will give that a try. I just normalized it by square miles, but I like the idea of the population also. Thank you for the reply. Brent Omaha Fire Department

Hello, I am in the 4th week of the "Going Places with spatial analysis" and I have a follow up questions pertaining to fire department response data. As we learned in the class, to create a choropleth map it is best to normalize the data for an accurate comparison between areas. They mention with crime data, you would count the number of calls and then divide by the area. I am not sure what that means. Any suggestion on how to properly normalize my fire response data in order to use in a choropleth map? Thanks, Brent
