I have talked to Tom Brown at Esri with the GeoData team and some Esri instructors about this exact same issue you are talking about. I am sorry to say this is how views currently function unless created with sde command line. The workarounds I mentioned above are ways around this and in my opinion might be considered best practice if you do not want to do joins in model builder. If you need any assistance with creating or modifying a script to fit your needs just let me know. I know this sucks as spatial views can make an administrator's life easier but for the time being if performance is key and if you do not want your users to have to answer 2 questions before they can view the data each time, this is the best way I have found to do this and automate the process. Hope it helps!

Michelle, The way I see it you have 2 options. Typically the slow performance from Views is relative to a few things. The complexity of the data, the complexity of the query behind the view, or the geometry storage you are using. If using SQL Server there are some known issues with performance degradation when using ST_Geometry versus SDE_BINARY. So if you are using ST_Geometry I would expect there to be a little lag. So you could look at changing the geometry type being used to store the features. Secondly, while stand alone feature classes sound like a drag it does not add too much overhead if it is scripted. I also ran into these same performance issues and to keep performance optimal I created a stand alone feature class from my view, then scripted a truncate and append method whereby I would truncate the stand alone feature class only if the record count in the view was more than 1 or 2 to ensure good data was in the view. Then I would append the records from the view to the stand alone feature class. Thereby breaking the join between the tables, increasing performance, and allowing me the opportunity to modify the spatial index if needed. Additionally if you have any attribute indexes on the feature class they will remain but might need to updated after a bulk load. If you are handy with python or model builder this could all be automated on a nightly routine after a recnpost or any other nightly maintenance. Furthermore, since using a truncate and append method there is no need for an exclusive schema lock to update the data, meaning ArcGIS Dekstop or Server could be using the data and it can still be updated while it is still in use so long as it is not versioned. The users might see the data disappear for a second while updating but if they pan or zoom it will come back. If doing this while no one is connected is an option then that is when I would recommend doing this, but in some cases you might need to update during the day just saying it could be done mid-day. Glad to hear things might be moving along although I have heard differently from others about how soon this will be addressed, I will keep my fingers crossed thanks for the update.

Another useful tip since you mentioned users in different states. If the projection of the data ever becomes an issue or if you ever wanted to replicate your data to a file geodatabase in Web Mercator (WKID: 3857) for use in ArcGIS Server this article shows how to register a replica in a different projection. 34129 - Create a replica where the child replica data is in a different coordinate system than the parent replica data

Ok something must have gone wrong during the upgrade process. I created a new app inside the builder added your widget and all is working as expected. Should not be too hard to recreate the app, sorry for the trouble. Thanks for the help!

Not really Robert, what is happening is when I click a draw tool (point, polygon, or polyline), the cursor never changes and even if I click on the map while the cursor is still set to the pan tool nothing happens. It is like the widget is not recognizing my clicks anywhere in the map and the cursor does not change when I click a draw tool.

Robert, Long time no talk to. I am trying to use the 3.7 version of the enhanced draw widget inside Application Builder. When opening the widget I am unable to draw anything as the cursor never changes from the hand/pan tool. Do you have any suggestions? I am also seeing this same behavior with your route widget. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is going back more than a few versions but I would imagine the same concept would apply. First create your elevations and store them in a file gdb. Then with the contours featureclass within a file gdb export to CAD and it should maintain your Z values. Back in the 9.1 days this was an issue. We could not export directly from SDE featureclass to CAD or Shapefile because it would not maintain the Z Value. The workaround or methodology was to export to a PGDB first then to CAD and it would maintain the Z Value. Hope this helps! Have not heard of this issue in quite a few versions but things like this have a tendency to creep back into later releases.

Yes create_view from 10.2.2 command line will still work against a 10.3 SDE. I tested some other commands like delete and they work as well.

Good question I did not test that command but I would assume it would work. I am on vacation right now if you can test this before I get back and post back here on the forum your results I am sure others as well as myself would be thankful. Sent via the Samsung GALAXY S®4, an AT&T 4G LTE smartphone

Ok so here is the unofficial workaround. I reached out to someone I know at Esri for a workaround and here is what we both tested and found to work. I will tell you this probably will not be supported by Esri Support but it works. Use 10.2.2 SDE command line to create your views in 10.3 SDE so they become registered with the sde user and geodatabase. The views will look and function in 10.3 just as they did in 10.2.x and prior releases. I have posted this enhancement on the ideas portal and got a work space granted for it but no one from Esri seems to be listening or responding from the geodata team. I would think you could still use other versions of the sde command line to create the views in 10.3 but I would not go back beyond 10.1 in my opinion. If you are upgrading to 10.3 use the last known version of sde command line in my opinion, which would be 10.2.2. Hope this helps and I will keep trying to pursue this with Esri. If I get no response I hope they do not mind getting some tough questions during the presentations at the Esri UC 2015 because they will be coming I am sure.

I did post this a while back and it seems somewhat popular, not really understanding how Esri Geodata team could take away this functionality without providing a suitable replacement? Asking users to pick a unique id field and a spatial extent when they are not power users seems sort of counter productive in my opinion. Thank you for the prompt reply but I would really like to see Esri provide a tool to accomplish the same level of functionality that the sde create view command line provided us. http://ideas.arcgis.com/apex/ideaSearchResults?s=Create+Views+In+ArcCatalog+Like+In+SDE+Command+Line&searchButton=search
