For several years, I have been using a model I created in ModelBuilder to generate mailing lists from Assessor parcel data.* The output is a dbf table. One of the final processes in the model is Collect Values (set as a parameter), which is intended to add the dbf to the MXD Table of Contents when the model is run from its dialog. In the MXD's Geoprocessing Options, the option is enabled to "Add results of geoprocessing operations to the display". Until recently, the model worked fine; specifically, the output dbf was added to the TOC as intended. But now, this is no longer happening. Yet, it does work if I run the tool in Edit mode & I enable Add to Display on the Collect Values output. I have read & re-read the Help documentation, user forums, etc., & have tinkered with the model & the MXD, but to no avail. My guess is that Collect Values has somehow become corrupted in my ArcMap install. I started having this issue while at version 10.4.1, but migrating to 10.5.1 did not resolve the problem. Any thoughts regarding what might have gone haywire? *Note: my model does not use an iterator; it is designed to generate only one mailing list per run. Thanks, -Chris

I haven't touched this thread in a while, so I don't know if others have discovered anything new during the interim. I'm now using version 10.2.2, & Delete Rows is still slow when I use it as a stand-alone tool.

fieldvalue=' '.join(fieldvalue.strip().split())
#in case fieldvalue=='', change empty string to space to avoid "Field is not Nullable" error
if not fieldvalue: fieldvalue=' ' I've been trying to set this up in the Field Calculator dialog, but I'm obviously missing something. Thus far, all I've achieved is a syntax error message. My situation is very similar to what Matt Goodman originally posted on 12-19-2011. In my case, the field from which I want to remove extra spaces is entitled MailAddres. What should I enter for the Expression & Pre-Logic Script Code fields to make this work? Maybe a more fundamental question is: is there a Python equivalent to the TRIM(text) function found in MS Excel? Thank you, Christopher J. Morneau

Gary, As I've indicated in my previous post today, try enclosing the Mosaic_to_New_Raster tool in a model (in ModelBuilder). Setup your parameters as needed, then save & close it. Then re-open it (click Open, not Edit) & run the model. There's no guarantee that this will make your Mosaic_to_New_Raster process run faster, but it's worth a try. This was my solution for the Delete Rows tool - it now performs lightning fast. -Chris

Can't verify that behavior in v10, but as a work around: 1. Copy the rows you want to keep to a new table 2. Use an update cursor (the .DeleteRow method) to delete the rows Yes, I could do that (option 1), but why would I want to create a 2nd table? Then I'd have to go back & delete the first table, then rename the 2nd to the original table name. It's not a good work around if it creates more work. I'd be better off just using the Delete Rows tool & wait the 30 seconds for it to run. Maybe Option 2 is better, but now it's a moot point. I enclosed the Delete Rows tool in a model & it takes about 1 second to run. Now, that's a work around! -Chris

In following up on these issues, I have discovered the following: In ArcCatalog, select (highlight) the tool in the Catalog Tree window first, then right-click the tool in the ArcToolbox window. Click on Item Description & click on the Edit button in the Item Description window. Make edits as needed (e.g., Dialog Reference, etc.) & click save. Now, when the tool is re-opened, its dialog will show the documentation revisions. So, yes, I found what I was missing, & I hope this helps others. But I feel that ESRI should clarify their Help documentation on this topic. In "A quick tour of documenting tools and toolboxes" in ArcGIS 10 Help, it should state upfront that the tool needs to be selected in the Catalog Tree window before doing anything. Chris Morneau L.A. I have models that I created in 9.3.1 & earlier that contain VBA code. As I upgrade them to Python-based code & make other modifications per Release 10, I have a need to revise existing documentation. I, too, am frustrated at not being able to do this in the new release. Thus far, I have found nothing in ArcGIS 10 Help or the ArcGIS Resource Center to assist me in resolving this issue (but I'll keep looking). Meanwhile, I have a related issue. I recently created a simple model containing only two processes & I wanted to add documentation, specifically for the parameters. In "A quick tour of documenting tools and toolboxes" in ArcGIS 10 Help, it says to right-click the tool & click Item Description, which displays the Description page. Fine, except when I do so, the title bar on the window refers to something completely different than my model. For example, it will show the name of the currently highlighted directory in ArcCatalog. Therein, the Item Description window is providing the wrong template - not the one I should be getting for my newly created tool, but rather for an existing file directory. In the Item Description window after Summary, I should see fields for Usage, Syntax, Code Samples, & Credits. I see none of that. Instead, after Summary, I see Description, Credits, & Use Limitation. What gives? Am I missing something here? Chris Morneau L.A. County Dept. of Regional Planning

Since upgrading to ArcGIS 10 (ArcInfo license level, SP1), I've experienced much slower performance with the Delete Rows GP tool (Data Management Tools > Tables > Delete Rows). I run a process a few times per week that generates a table averaging approximately 100 rows. For each table, I may need to do some post-processing & manually delete a handful of rows. Yet, I don't want to open an edit session each time. My solution has been to select the few rows I don't need, then run the Delete Rows tool, which deletes only the selections. This worked lightning fast in 9.3.1, but takes upwards of a half minute or so in version 10. That may not sound like much, but it's frustrating that something that worked so well in the last release is now bottle-necking my work flow. Is this a flaw in the tool, or do I need to adjust something to improve the tool's performance? Chris Morneau Los Angeles County Dept of Regional Planning
