Hello all, I have searched the forums, help files, and python site for an answer to this question but could not find it as it relates to the "ExportToPDF" function. Up to this point I have been relying on trial and error to get the dateTimeStamp in front of the filename with no success. Currently, I have a script that creates and exports maps in a PDF format using the same name as the mxd followed by the dateTimeStamp. What I would like to have is a filename that shows the date first (YYMMDD) followed by the name of the map document. For example, 120315 Sewer Lines. How can this be accomplished? Is there another script format that allows you to change the order of elements in filenames? Any help or insight is appreciated 🙂 I am using the following script: dateTimeStamp = time.strftime('%y%m%d') arcpy.mapping.ExportToPDF(mxd,r"S:\GIS Data\Scripts\Temp PDF\Sewer Lines" + dateTimeStamp + ".pdf")

I have a relatively simple procedure that I want to accomplish using python. I am automating production of a standard series of maps showing the same location but different data. When writing a script to produce a USGS quad map of a property location, I would like the map title to change depending on the grid that the property falls within. My logic here has been to perform a select by location and use the selected "Name" attribute to become the map title. Can a selected attribute become a text element? So far, I have written the selection criteria but I do not know where to go from here. arcpy.SelectLayerByLocation_management("Quad\USGS Quad Boundaries","CONTAINS","lyrFile5","","NEW_SELECTION") This procedure seems so simple but I have not been able to find a solution. Any help or insight on this matter is appreciated.

ArcGIS online has some good basemap layers for download. I am not sure if USGS topos are there but there is a shaded relief map that is just as aesthetically pleasing and seems that it may work for your purpose. It's just lacking the information topos provide. Having it saved locally, however, will definitely decrease load time. If you are interested in the information of the topo maps more than how they look I would suggest adjusting the visible extent to only allow the layer to appear at 1:100,000 or less. At greater extents use a layer you have saved locally such as the shaded relief suggested above and have that turn off when you get to 1:100,001 to make a seamless transition to the topo layer.
