This was a bug that we fixed at 10.0 SP3. If you are attempting to use insert or update cursors against versioned data and they are not working, please try installing SP3. I've actually been using SP3 for a while. I've decided to just to my edits in a file geodatabase and then just replace all the rows in the SDE table on a weekly basis with Delete and Append.

I've run into the same issue with cursors on a table. My script works fine on a file geodatabase, but does not update or insert records in a versioned SDE. Does anyone know if there is a workaround for this?

Could you use ExtractByAttributes(in_raster, where_clause) instead of SelectLayerByAttribute_management(in_layer_or_view, {selection_type}, {where_clause})?

I'm doing something similar (not with rasters though) and I've found that I need to use MakeFeatureLayer_management and give it a name in order to use SelectLayerByAttribute_management or SelectLayerByLocation_management on my datasets. Good luck!

Thanks guys - but are you sure about that ? I have a video demo of my teaching assistant writing that code manually and running it from pythonwin and an input box pops up- I am brand new to python and arcgis so not disputing you guys but I see it happening so just wondering. Here are our homework instructions directing us to do it that way also : Step 2: Replace Hard Coded Values With Dynamic Values Replace the hard-coded values with the arcpy.GetParameterAsText() function. ? Save the FC2FC_HardCoded.py script to C:\usr\yourname\lab12\FC2FC.py. import arcpy, os.path ? Modify the following variables to accept user-specified input. inFC = arcpy.GetParameterAsText(0) outFC = arcpy.GetParameterAsText(1) expression = arcpy.GetParameterAsText(2) fieldInfo = arcpy.GetParameterAsText(3) ? Save the script. He does this manually in the video and immediately runs the script- I will see if I can post a screen shot PythonWin does have a popup for user input for input and raw_input--I haven't used the arcpy GetParameter functions with PythonWin, but I have used the other with it. You could try this: inFC = raw_input("Please enter parameter 0: ")
outFC = raw_input("Please enter parameter 1: ")
expression = raw_input("Please enter parameter 3: ")
fieldInfo = raw_input("Please enter parameter 4: ")

Can you post the code that you're using? It should look something like this: import arcpy
arcpy.AddField_management(r"C:\data\airport.gdb\schools", "ref_ID", "LONG", 9, "", "", "refcode", "NULLABLE", "REQUIRED")

Remove the quotes around fieldVal in the CalculateField_management line. It's a variable, not a string (yes, the variable CONTAINS a string, but in order for you to get the value of the variable, it must read it as a variable and not as the character positions of the string input). Like this: # Process: Calculate Field
gp.CalculateField_management(shpFile_ok, "date", fieldVal, "PYTHON_9.3", "")

Try this: arcpy.CalculateField_management(test_shapefile_path, "test_field", "!shape.firstpoint.x!", "PYTHON_9.3", "") For some reason, this does not work if the mode is set to "PYTHON." How do you remove the spaces in excel? Is there an easy automated way? Use Find/Replace in Excel. In the Find box, type a space. In the Replace box, don't type anything. Press "Replace All."

Try creating a file geodatabase and outputting your data there. File geodatabases can hold more data than shapefiles.

Double is a data type that does not support non-numeric characters (other than a decimal point). Would striping the alphabet characters and just having the number in the field meet your needs?

You can use python's string method lstrip to do this with the field calculator. See http://docs.python.org/release/2.6.6/library/stdtypes.html#string-methods for information on how lstrip works.
